Balls to him, i'm catholic and it won't affect me in anyway other than saying a different name when i go to mass. This is another Pope who's taking the catholic church backwards, he is agaisnt contraception and doesn't want woman to be priests and other such views.

the Papacy is a convoluted front for the underlying power of papal bureaucracy
Benedict is a cool name, though. i probably couldn't have picked better.

it would kinda suck to be really catholic, because then you would have to confess your sins every time you masturbate

yea something big is probably going on in iraq so they cover it up by talking about the pope. The pope is just another person, people think that he talks to god or something, give me a break.

If anyone can explain the point of the pope to me, I'd be impressed. What does he really do? Catholics are intelligent people. Let them decide for themselves what they want. The whole pope thing is an old tradition that just really doesn't make any sense to me anymore. Since when does religion need it's own government? No other denomination has one... No offense to any Catholics out there.

The deal is 65 years ago when Hitler thought he was the man the new Pope was a member of the Hitler Youth Outfit. But I'm kinda thinking if not Spinners then definately 100 Spoke Rims for that bad boy.

CNN said that they picked a old priest on purpose. they want a "transitional" pope who will only serve for 1-7 years or something. I'm not sure why but It might have to do with the current situation of the world or something.

I heard they chose the Pope by playing "Paper-Rock-Scissors".

what I have actually heard is they basically flip a coin or draw the short straw. It makes perfect sense for any Catholic. For yall nonCatholics I'll explain what goes down. The Cardinals pray for awhile asking God to guide their decisions. I think they then do the flip a coin type thing because it is a way that God will directly influence the papacy. Because God is all-powerful and all-knowing he would almost "rig" the game to result in the best choice winning. Sounds dumb to nonCatholics but makes sense to Catholics.

Nope, they have a ballot for every time they **** up black smoke comes out the chimney and when they do it right white smoke comes out but this time the weather was dodgey so noone could see the white smoke properly so noone was really paying attention when the pope was announced.

2 things make me sick here ... 1. non-catholics bashing something religious to others and 2. catholics joking along with it and making it sound like some joke of a thing.

jump to whichever point(s) you want.

1.Here's what the conclave (electing of the pope) is.

You have priests(ministers) and a very select few of them become cardinals. They're the 'best of the best' priest-wise you could say. They are the ones that "vote" on the next pope. It's not "voting" as in political terms, it's they are in a conclave, a latin word which means "locked in", and they fast and pray and don't talk to anyone. They put themselves in Gods hands to help them basically "free their head", if you will, of what the political world is telling them to choose, and who their human nature tells them to pick, and help lead them to pick the person who would represent God the most. No body knows exactly how the voting takes place. Well, the papacy does, of course, there's a certain way it has to be done. But it's not something the genral public knows about, probably for the better, that way people aren't trying to change the way the church does things and making it all political when it is certainly not.

2. the whole "point" of the pope.
In the catholic faith, some men decide to devote themselves to serving God their whole lives. These are preists. They spend 8+ years in preperation before they become a priest. Priests are usually put in charage of a church, or help out another priest with a church. All the churches in an area are called a dioesce. Kind of like how there's different reigions of a country... like mid-west, east-coast. kinda like that.. just alot smaller reigoins. In charge of each "region" or dioseces, if you will, is a bishop. A bishop is a priest who is appointed by the pope to watch over/ guide the catholic church. What's the difference between a bishop and a priest? they both stand and represent Jesus in sacraments, the mass, etc., just one has been given more responsiblity. Kind of like in the real world, some people are just more 'able' to carry out certain tasks.
Up the ladder from bishop, you have cardinals. Usually the pope is chosen out from this category, but it's not a requirement. The only "requirment" is that the pope-to-be is a priest. Anyway. Above the cardinals is the Pope. He's the one that The "highest priests" belive will guide the church and keeps it's ways the best. He isn't a political figure. He isn't there to make laws and run governments. He is the closest thing to God on earth. He represents Jesus, like any other priest does, in the mass, or in sacraments. He stands up for the church, and through prayer is led by God, to help make decisions if one is ever needed to be made, also with the help of the cardinals. The pope helps elect bishops, cardinals, and makes other decisions. But he isn't a leader. You can't kill the pope and kill the church. You can't kill the pope and take over the church. the pope represents Jesus on this earth. It's not like we ran around screaming the day the pope died.. i mean.. of course we thought it was sad someone died, but it was fine, because the church doesn't change. It's always here, always the same, and always will be, no matter which priest, as a common priest, or as pope is saying the mass, and carrying on the ways of the church.

being a catholic school girl has it's ups and downs.... not sure what this one is
