First things first. You should have said weather or not you had a windows or a mac. If you have a windows your gonna need a fire wire port. They cost about $30-40. If you have a mac you shouild already have a port. Then you shoud check if your cameras Mini DV. If it is Mini DV you just plug a fire wire into your camera and into the fire wire port that you will have to install on your computer.(if its a windows) If your camera isnt Mini DV you'll have to buy a firewire card for it. Im not to sure how much it cost though.

As for editing programs, if your just starting out with editing I would recomend Windows Movie Maker for Windows and Imovie for mac. If your computer is new it should already have it on it. If its older you can buy the programs. They both arent very good but they are extremely simple and easy to learn. Once you get them good you should get Adobe of Sony Vegas for windows. If you have a mac then you want final cut pro. You can also get after affects to make all sorts of cool things. Adobe, Vegas, Final Cut, and After affects are all very expensive. I think after affects is $1000. Windows Movie Maker and Imovie are relitively cheap though.
