alright guys, as some of u may know, i had a heat stroke today and almost had to get hospitalized. it was 99 degrees and i didnt eat any breakfast/lunch. I didnt drink water in consistent intervals, instead i drank energy drinks. Energy drinks do not rehydrate and thus, i wasnt getting water in my system. We went to the grocery store to pick up some food and drinks but as i was walking around, i started feeling dizzy and stuff. I started sweating profusely and soon enough, i looked as if i had just jumped in a pool. I couldnt see straight and paying for my bag of cheetos was HARSH. reaching into my pockets was horribly hard, i couldnt see the cashier at all.. it was all a blur. I went outside and sat on the benches to calm down. I ended up passing out... my friends were awesome and helped me out as best they could. they brought me a drink and got me home... thanks to them, im good now.
Learn from my mistake and remember to stay hydrated and always remember to get food in your system! and dont just drink energy drinks. be smart guys, dont be stupid like me!

Yea I have had stuff close to that. I normally skate pretty close to my house so it wouldn't have been so bad. And also all you kiddies who drink your Kool-aid and your Pepsi, stop on hot days. The sugar will make it worse.

This happened to me a week or two ago. I had to skate home, which was two miles, right after two hours of skating and on an empty stomach. Damn California; it was 5pm and 108 degrees. Well, nothing to drink + empty stomach + skating hard to get home and out of the heat = heat stroke. I opened my front door and looked at my mother; she asked me if I was alright and I promptly collapsed. This is an amazingly hot summer, and I wanna remind everyone to drink of either Gatorade, Powerade, or water; unless you wanna suffer Jay's and my fate.

Yeah, that I forgot to mention: about halfway home, when I started to become really dehydrated, I started feeling incredibly ill. Also, I got a headache right before I passed out. It all sucks in general; just drink a lot of fluids.

Here is what you do if you start having a heat stroke. A heat stroke is a very serious thing, kids.
As soon as you start feeing dizzy, light headed, or nauseated in a severe way, go to someone's house as fast as possible. Tell someone to get you a glass of water (Not too cold because it will make your stomach freak out). Go to a nice cool room, lay down, and sip the water, don't gulp it all down at once though. Make sure you have someone sitting beside you incase you need to go to the hospital (tell them to make very little movement and noise). Just turn the lights out, sip your glass of water, and try to stay calm. It also helps to have a wet wash cloth over your eyes and forehead. If you start to feel better, don't get up and start moving around. Be certain that you're absolutely fine before you get up and walk around. If you start to feel worse and your whole body starts to shake (like it does when you're very cold), and you still feel hot, then you should really think about going to the hospital.
By the way, throwing up is kinda normal while having a heat stroke. More than five to ten times is too much though. Spenser, if you can puke as much as you did in the heat and still make jokes about it, you have super powers or some shit.

i probably do. but it wasnt really heatstroke.. i was talking about dehydration. heatstroke was another time.
but yeah, it really was over 20 times, and up till the last 5 or 6 times, at least a whole redbull size can came out. the first 8 or so were like.. a bottle of coke or something at least.
i was like.. holy crap. how is this possible.

I dunno about that Gatorade thing. The sugar dehydrates me and makes me feel even crappier. Cold, warm, whatever, water is good. Sodas taste good when it's hot but it does not settle well, nor does Gatorade. It's the same thing with pretty much every fluid but water and Propel for me. Just get a gallon jug of water and keep refilling it at home for every session.

The only two spots I skate at both have water hoses right beside them. I just drink from that. Its not Dasani or Propel or anything, but it will do just fine. Water is water.

Good post, I'll stress this to, I work for UPS in one of the big warehouse hubs loading the brown trucks and its always really hot, Gatorade is good yes, the salt contained keeps the water in your system and it replenishes your electrolights, however its a heavy drink and sometimes doesn't sit well in your stomach, so I recommend pure water, I drink well over 64oz a day its the best thing you could ever drink, it keeps you hydrated, lubricates joints and muscles and keep your organs working properly.

Yeah, a bad enough heat stroke can ruin your life. There is this 20 sum year old that goes to my church that used to be a super-athlete. He was an all-stater in basketball, track and baseball. He got a heat stroke one day working out and now he can't play any sports because he has a way higher chance of getting another heat stroke and if he gets another one he has a chance of dying.

Heat strokes and dehydration can really mess you up.
About five years ago, I was playing baseball and a little kid on the other team was in left feild. He collapsed in the middle of the game and someone noticed him falling down, so they went out there and he was having a heat-stroke.
They took him to the hospital and, because of some complications, the boy is now classified mentally retarded.

Complications
Untreated severe dehydration may result in seizures, permanent brain damage, or death.
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000982.htm
Always drink WATER because sports drinks have sugar in them which is harder for your body to process. Skating is a serious workout and will make you get dehydrated extremely fast so drink up, before you skate, during and after.

It gets soooo hot here. On most days lately, it's been 110 degrees in the shade and when your out of the shade there are no clouds and it's much hotter. And so humid too.
I went outside the other day, full of energy and spunk, and I only watered some tomatoes in the shade. It took about five minutes and I came back in because I was soaking with sweat and out of energy.

the solution: get a big plastic bottle say 2 litres or whatever funky measurements you Americans use, fill half of it with water, freeze it overnight then when you go out to skate simply fill the rest of the bottle up, add a couple slices of lemon and you are bloody set. The water stays cold for hours. Its really the best thirst quencher there is (plus the lemon gives it a great tang).

We just did that yesterday, but instead of a lemon we put some lime in it (it's all we had, we don't want to copy that Coke Lime shit). It was pretty good. I think cold water feels like it satisfies your thirst better.

Believe this guy if you think thats stupid...I did worse luckily it didnt wind up too horrible...Skating one day along in the park our sessions are from like 10am-11pm. I was skating 10-11 at that exact interval non stop how i live i dont know lol my legs were dead thats all i can say. and i dont remember much more but anyway. It was about 9 it was dark they had the lights going the music pumping, i was psyched first day in the park as a matter of a fact and i was trying Vert for the first time. 5 footer dropping in lets go right?? yeah. i got through with that smacking a few times getting a minor headache so anyway after i drop in since i cant do much more than that i get back onto the street course, bust a few moves and so forth. Get up to the 8 footer hp we have idk why...i was like so psyched that day/night i would try anything but...not our 13 footer thank God i didnt i was seriously thinking about it and I believe God saved me from this one. Anyways. I had dropped in continously falling straight on my face (Pads of course...First time on Vert you got to. lol and i sometimes wear knee pads even on street. I like to go knees, roll, recover.) So here I am...continously dropping in busting face first knees, arms, back, whatever you preffer. So I take a "slight". if you can even call it that. break recover myself im soaked with sweat its pouring off of me i flick my hair out of my face and my vision is all blurry im thinking wtf is wrogn with me but i dont care i just know i want to land this 8 footer and not be a bitch to my friends. i let my trucks position themselves properly over the coping of the 8 footer...my back foot comes to the tail and pushes down, i gather myself one last time my vision still all ****ed up i push down what i think is my nose and im gone my foot totally missing the nose as i plunge, i pass/black out in the middle of it all and the next thing i know is that im in the hospital...so yeah kids...do drink and eat plenty of foods if your going to go skating and HARD skating all day like me. we had concession at the park but i ignored it even my friends told me to take a break...i was relentless...and being relentless is not a good thing as we can see here in my little fault...so please drink SOMETHING GOOD FOR YOU like Gatorade...I preffer PowerADE but i dont care anymore as long as it replenishes and hydrates THE GOOD STUFF not the BAD SHIT...so yeah take an educational lesson off this one...dont end up like me luckily my fall wasnt so bad they say. and if i wouldnt have pads it wouldve been soo my ass in the hospital for months...i dont know what would be broken, etc. You get the picture so have a :-47: filled day?

And powerade is cheaper. Glad everyone in this thread is okay (Snaker,Sk8, Jay, Spenser) When you said you were throwing up all those times it reminded me of something...
When I was in Michigan for Soccer Nationals or Regionals, can't remember, I had food poisoning from eating at Bob Evan's the night before and it didn't feel good the next morning and we were walking out the hotel and right when I got to the sliding doors I threw up all over. Then I threw up a couple more times. I went to Wal Greens and I threw up when the car parked and we got some medicine and I took it and then I was feeling a little better and I didn't want to let the team down so I went to the game and the second I got in there I didn't feel good so we left and the whole ride home I was throwing up, and it was ALL over the side of the car. I also threw up into a bunch of plastic bags and they were like filled to the top and it looked like clear water with orange food coloring..I don't know wtf I was throwing up. But I counted and I threw up somewhere between 23 and 27 times from Michigan to Ohio.
I also have had heat stroke and dehydration I think from having games in the heat and everything. Luckily this summer, which was the driest and hottest I have ever experienced I believe, I didn't do any sports and I didn't really skate too much either.

I think we all agree what is deserved here is a simple mouth dropping..."Wow..........." ?? Thats some pretty insane shit man...i mean yeah the skatepark was a thrasher...but nothing that damn bad...but good job on the sliding doors...wouldve been better if it was on the place you ate at XD that was interesting. :-5: But yeah props man for survivin that day I wouldve felt so horrible heaving [puking but not puking anything] and just puking it all together...you mustve had a full stomache of poisoned shit food? the reason that powerade/gatorade is better than water is because 1)It puts the good stuff you sweat out. 2)It has salt which is good for 2 reasons...1-Well duh, its in your sweat..and morwe important...2-- the sodium in the powerade/gatorade is harder to filter out of your kidneys..instead of water which goes right through your kidneys, the sodium in the gatorade/powerade stays in our kidneys longer, thus giving you more hydration than water

Just getting back from boot, I'll tell you flat out that hydration is one of the most important things when it comes to any kind of physical activity....when you're well hydrated, you perform better physically and you think clearer mentally. I seen way too many kids go down as heat cases down on the island for me to ever skip a shot at drinking water...and if you're going to drink a sports drink, drink powerade...not gatorade....gatorade is just like all other sports drinks as in it dehydrates you more than it helps...powerade provides a lot better fluid hydration that gatorade and it puts more of the things you need back in your body. Water will forever be the best source of hydration though....down there I was averaging between 8 and 10 canteens (quarts) a day....it was between 90 and 95 degrees most of the time though...so obviously in cooler climates and with less physical exursion, you'll need less water, otherwise you'll be running to piss every 2 minutes because you're not sweating out all that extra fluid....

Luckily in England we don't get 100 degree temperature very often (once a year maybe if we are lucky lol). The temperature is normally no more than 60 degrees so I've never found myself close to passing out. Still I do drink as I am generally thirsty lol. That's like the only advantage of English Weather. :D

GATORADE is good. I run 5 to 6 days a week during the summer and the season, never less than 5 miles a day sometimes over 10 and my coach would always advise Gatorade or sports drinks over water because it has electrolytes and other stuff in it that you dont get from water. Water is fine but if you can get Gatorade then drink that. Soda and carbonated drinks are horrible for hydration, the large amount of salt and the carbonation can absorb more water than it gives you which dehydrates you even more. But hey, if Gatorade doesnt settle well with you drink water. Drink whatever you like better, but there IS an advantage to drinking Gatorade. Yes, hydration is extremely important. I cant skate well if im not hydrated. When im not hydrated enough I feel like im in a trance and cant concentrate enough to skate well. I usually just stop when this happens and go get something to drink.

i THINK we all get the damn gist of things: drink fluids....
Some people get very very bad headaches\ migranes when they don't get enough fluids into their body.. now when you get a headache dont just go and buy yourself a pepsi or whatever- caffine and all the other crap in that stuff makes it WORSE- it takes out calcium in your body, and plus, makes you feel like shit.
p.s.- sorry people, cant spell too good ( when saying "people" i mean HTTT inpreticulair) =p

Yeah, one time I was trying to land tre flips on a board with no trucks on the trampoline, and It was in the middle of the summer, (we had record breaking heat!) and I started feeling dizzy, and my eyes kept felling heavy like they were going to close, but I somehow got inside and drank some water. Then about 10 minutes later I fely better.

12-09-2005, 03:02 PM
I hate water, and I'm real stubborn, so when I want to land a trick, like one I was doing off a drop in front of our house, I keep trying. I went so hard, I was extremely dizzy, felt like puking, and could hardly walk, I continued to kickflip off the drop until I landed it (I have extreme trouble doing crap off drop's, but at least I can kickflip off 'em now). I stumbled inside, got a pitcher of sugar free kool aid, some orange juice, and water, oh yeah, and some raw noodles, laid down on the couch and watched the Simpsons. I also almost had heat stroke once, but I refused to fall down, and caught myself, while hardly concsious (sp?) and then continued to do my papers. Those are my close encounters, and btw, any pop (espescially (sp) rootbeer) seems to have a hydrating effect on me, so that's pretty cool, although probably a placebo.

Not much to add except to say that water is great for hydration...the best! Unfortunately it has no electrolytes, so a sports drink is necessary for electrolyte repletion. Ideally you should have both water and a sports drink on hand. Many people mix a 50/50 solution of water and sports drink to accommodate this. If it is a hot day...the old adage of drinking every 15 min is a great idea. I ride a bike about 100 to 120 miles a week in the summer and never have had a problem with hydration using this method.
Sodas aren’t any worse than sports drinks for hydration. True they are packed with sodium but sports drinks have lots more. Water is a must...try quenching with just Gatorade....last summer we did an 80 mile ride in July finishing up Gold Hill in Virginia City NV (18% grade). I took 2 bottles of water and a 100oz of Gatorade in my hydration pack. My friends were excreting salt like crazy(powdered on their skin) and stopped sweating. I was still sweating.. but my mouth was dry....too much Gatorade not enough water.
If you’re skating a few hours...water will do fine. If its all day then add a sports drink.
Remember you can over do it on just water it creates a hypo-osmolar condition and people have died from it!

"Nuh uhhhhhhh," to the only-drink-gatorade-or-powerade people. Electrolytes, sure, whatever, but all the sodium, potassium, and SUGAR (simple carbohydrates people... they're good for nothing) will actually dehydrate you in the long run.
However, drinking a lot of just water can actually overhydrate you--plus not give you the electrolytes you need--resulting in hyponatremia, and very serious consequences.
So the best solution is to really drink BOTH. Water down your gatorade, or alternate gulps between gatorade and water. That, or, since Gatorade is stupid expensive and tastes like shit, eat a couple bananas before you go skate (full of sodium & potassium--"electrolytes"), and then just drink water at the sesh.
Also, off topic, but it's a pretty bad idea to go all out on something all day long--any physical activity--even you are hydrated. You really shouldn't do any physical activity for more than a couple hours at a time. If you plan on going all day, at least break it into segments, so you can have an ok meal and return the energy you REALLY NEED to your body.

Some are getting dehydration confused with "bonking" If you don't eat and you are active all the hydration in the world isn't going to save your from bonking. Bonking is when you run low on carbohydrate. When you don't eat and are active your brain doesn't have the glucose it needs to run and you bonk ....dizzy, sick, feeling hot and shaky and passing out. Don't forget to eat too!

a good idea is to eat a bannana or somthing before you leave (gives you energy without dehydrating you like energy drinks)and grab a water bottlee (disposable, so that it wont be such a loss if you lose it) and you should also grab some money, so that if you are thirsty you can buy some water or gaterade at a store nearby...

Any kind of soda dehydrates you. So if you go skating all day and/or very hard drink a lot of water.

Not true. Think about it, who does the testing? Gatoraide. So of course their product is the best. When it comes down to it, what your body uses up is water, therfore, you need to replenish it with water. Nothing more, nothing less, nothing better.

alright guys, as some of u may know, i had a heat stroke today and almost had to get hospitalized. it was 99 degrees and i didnt eat any breakfast/lunch.
Learn from my mistake and remember to stay hydrated and always remember to get food in your system! and dont just drink energy drinks. be smart guys, dont be stupid like me!

to everyone:
Gatorade.
Gatorade.
Gatorade.
If you can't afford it, water is also your best friend
actually its half gatorade half water. because there is not enough water inside gatorade to rehydrate you. sure it tastes not as good but if you want your hydration to stay id advise it. even 3/4s Gatorade 1/4 water works too. LEarned this from judo during a national camp the hard way. (heat heat exhaustion)
