The best one I ever had was a Creative NOMAD Zen Xtra, which is just a full size version of the Zen micro, and I loved it. A very good value, I'd say go for the Micro.

Yeah I have a 512 mb sandisk...its extremely durable, I've landed on it so many times. An ipod would have shattered if I fell on it as hard as I did with this sandisk.

i had a 128mb nike psa thing. i lost it one day on my home... i dropped it and it rolled into a sewer. *sigh* if u go to a discovery store at the mall, they usually have some good deals on good mp3 players. IPods are swell and all but id rather have something that lasts than have a ridiculous amount of music on me.

I've got the 512 Vibe mp3 player from www.pny.com It has a nifty face that slides up so access the buttons. It looks super cool when you show your friends and prevents you from hitting the buttons while skating. It's about as big as a lighter and also comes in a 1gig version.

Ive got phillips one. think its make is HDD but i wouldnt swear on that. i has a little less memory than an ipod mini, 2GB witch is still enought though and it is a fair price. it has basically all the same features as an ipod.

get an ipod they can hold 3000 songs .

i have a 40gb iPod. it can hold i think a little less than 10,000 songs. iPod's have a special "bling" factor that I like alot. the zen looks cool too. If you dont wanna spend alot just get a mini or even a shuffle.

Ok....
Ive had both the Zen micro and the ipod mini.
I would NOT buy the zen micro due to a defect in the earphoneplug , since it is situated in the middle whenever the earphone plug gets knocked the soldering that is holding the connections together brake. Thus the earphonesocket is broken. Do not tell me this was a oneoff brakage because i had 4 of them and this happened to everyone.
I would however highly recommend the ipod mini , i have had mine half a year with no complaints , i have skated and i took some bad falls with it , i holds up very good. Just now has it broken due to me dropping it in fine sand.
Go for the ipod. :)
Good luck with your buy !

Easy, iRiver H10. 5, 6, 20, and 40 gigs of space. They are 250 to 300 dollars. There is an AM/FM tuner, full color screen, you can view text from it, pictures, and if you have the right firmware, video. And of course, extremely good quality music. I have myself a 20 gig, and I love it to death. Screw iPod, this is a killer MP3 Player. They look really really cool too. They come in grey, remix blue, red, and silver.

Iriver has some good memory based ones. My bro got a really nice 512 for like 270(sure price has dropped now) color screen, 11 equalizers, small, great batter life. Or you can go Cd. Thats what I am going now to save money. I just have a CD player (you can get them to read MP3s) just put the headphones on, slip the wire under my shirt and into my pocket where the CD player rest.

Or in casset players, I know sony used to have some nice ones. Though writing your music to that would require special hardware, so its not to practical.

not with this, my hard-skatin' amigo. this card can store roughly 20 songs, and the player already has a built in 'hard drive' as it would be, with a special port at the side which comes with cable so you can edit that too. so all in all it stores around 30 songs, but if you got a bigger card, it would store about 50. and these cards can fit into card readers, which arent that expenxive or uncommon.
