The Ollie came from the mid seventies Alan "Ollie" Gelfand...so technically an Ollie is ol'skool yo. Some of the ol' skool rippers in the 70s did them from pipe to pipe. Here is a blast from the past....we couldn't figure out how they were doing ollies back then...my friend saw an add in the back of Skateboarder. You could buy velcro shoe straps for your feet and board so you could olie ---ha ha He bought them ..they were fun but wore out to fast!

I'm quite partial to Bertlemans and Beanplants(boneless with your front hand). I was doing 360 bertlemans on the bowl at Krush today, and I loved those. But I would have to say that pivots are the most fun. You just ride fakie, wind up, and spin backside on your back wheels.

The "old-school ollie(cannonball position grab/jump)" that everyone is talking about is called a Gorrilla. A Gorilla is also when you wrap your toes around the edge of your board and you jump up, taking the board with you.

i like oldschool impossibles, or at least that's what people call them. when you put your board in primo, and kinda with your foot like smack it and wrap it around and land. also, i like doing bertslides, or whatever they are really called, but not a gnarly old school one, a small one, to keep your balance, like if you are doing a stair set, and you land leaning too far on one side, sometimes people put their hand down, and do a little 180 powerslide to keep balance, i like just doing those on the ground.

Skaterat,

Great pics of the laybacks, edgy bert and the barking version, as well! Are those current pics?

From your profile, I see that you've been on a board for a long time. I've been skating since the mid-late 70s and would miss the old days of Skateboarder Mag.

I'm back into it now, and just bought a new complete tonight. Tomorrow I'll FUBAR the snot out of the graphics with some rock & rolls at the park. Man, I wish decks were NATURAL wood (no stain, no "dip") with a simple company logo/model.

Thanks for sharing the pics!

How about a layback rollout, ala Duane Peters ;)

Regards,

skaterat,

Those pics are too cool! Those layback roll-out shots are killer! What park is that? I need to get up to Elk Grove, CA and Ione, CA and try their parks. I've been told they have bowls of various sizes. The park I've been skating in Lodi has a cool mid-sized ramp, but something about a bowl/pool makes a frontside grind or 50/50 a hundred times cooler.

BTW- how do I post pics?!

Thanks again.

My favorite old school move, we used to call them tail taps (circa 1980), I don't know what they call them now (just got back into it). But when your back wheels were about to hit the coping, you grabbed the boards nose and pulled, thus sliding up the coping on the boards tail.

they're definitely good when they're done right (i.e. on a board smaller than 40", in a pool or on a bank)...but i've seen too many (and i'm not exaggerating on this one) sandal and puka-shell necklace wearing longboarders do them improperly (i.e. drop a hand down and carve in a circle on their 46" pintails). i know, i know that sounds like a stereotype...but we actually have "those guys" around campus here...just for clarification, i am not one of "those guys"

i am a fan of the ol' coleman slide though...going down a hill, drop back on your front hand (with slide gloves on...gloves with some sort of abrasion-resistent puck) and kick the board out in front of you while STILL GOING DOWN THE HILL.
youtube it, it's a lot clearer
