For your first board, I would recommend at *most* a blank deck setup from your local shop..nothing really expensive. Heck, my first board was a walmart board for maybe $20 or $30.

As for tricks to learn, first, get the board, ride it around like crazy. Get as comfortable as you possibly can on it. This will help you in the long run, because you'll be so used to it, landing tricks will come second nature. After you got a nice feel for the board, work on ollies, and shove its to start with. You can try more like kickflip/heelflips, or 180's and stuff, but I think it's best to build a solid foundation, so get those ollies nice and fluid and rock solid. The shove its are good because they help you learn the essential skill of flicking the tail with your back foot...very important for more advanced tricks down the road.

Hope to have helped..good luck and practice, practice, practice..

A 20 dollar blank off of blankdecks.com is fine. I wouldnt get a walmart board just because there trucks are crap, bearings, and the board. I would just get a blank.
