Here's some shots of me around '77 learning Frontside Airs in the Pipe Bowl at the Pipeline Skatepark. Keep in mind this bowl was 13' deep with about 3' of vert.
Starting with Rail Grabs.

wouldn't it be easier if that bowl had coping to pop off of for the air? The first pic is about as far as i ever got in a bowl like that.

These were taken about the time they started putting real pools with tiles and coping in parks. All the bowls at that time had rounded lips. Our Combi Pool came about a year or two later.

But for my curiosity doens't the coping make it a little easier to pop out? Or am i high

I don't know if your high or not but ya, coping makes for good pop for airs. It also locks you in when doing lip tricks.

Not high then, Cool pics...i wish we had thought to take pics back then. None of us had access to a camera. Priceless Colin!
By "locks you in" do you mean your board hangs up while you end up in the bowl? I had that happen one time, as i hit bottom my board came unhung and nailed me right behind the ear...ding!

No, what your talking about is Hanging Up. That's when your truck or trucks hang up on the coping and toss you in the bottom.
By locking up I mean when you lock your wheels into place against the coping during grinds, 50-50s, laybacks, tailslides, that kinda stuff. By locking in on the coping it keeps you in place for whatever trick your doing. You can see my back wheel locked in in this pic. It's holding me in the bowl.

The pipeline was rad. I had the priviledge of skating there in the 80s. I think my first time there was the scariest experience of my life. Everyone ripping, huge terrain, vibing from the locals. Oh man what a killer time that was!
Nice shots! Cohort and Cowboypunk. The cornerstone of the core SoCal companies. I hope you have RocknRon Rockets in those Black Plagues!

Nothing but Rockets for my son and I.
Those were killer times. I moved to Upland in '78 and skated there pretty much everyday till the early '80's. Met and skated with alot of very cool people.
