I've been thinking about picking up skating as a side hobby. I'd like some suggestions for a complete that will be cheap as possible without being a total piece of shit. I was thinking Mini-Logo deck and wheels, Bones Reds bearings and Venture trucks (this is based on recommendations made to me). Is this a good setup for a beginner? (I could give a shit how it looks or the brand name) What about all the other doodads and whatnot? (griptape, screws, etc.) How about deck sizing? I'm probably just going to be skating on streets, and I'm about 5'10" 140 lbs (skinny bastard).

Any other advice to me? :D Like how to take shit from all the super-duper crazy skaters who hate n00bs?

And also, do I really need skate shoes? Or will regular old shoes work for starting out? Thanks a lot. :D

blankdecks.com board.

basically anything, but id recommend the sturdy mold. very nice. then.. probably thunder lows, whatever blank wheels (probably 51-55mm) in whichever hardness (the A thing..), probably just some of their blank bearings, any hardware, and any grip (jessup would be your best bet though)

theyre actually very good quality, but its cheap because its blank and all that.

oh and size, you and i are the exact same basically, because im 5'10 and 140 too, but.... thats not how you choose a board size. its personal preference. however, sometimes it does matter, because you dont want to be a super big guy with a small board or vice versa.. id recommend around 7.75, up to 8 for street riding.

and yes, youll need skate shoes, but they dont have to be expensive. most of the time, i find the cheaper the better, because it usually means theyre more simple, and simple shoes skate better (thats really a fact, no matter what anyone tells you). since youre a beginner its not really going to matter, just look for something that looks good to you because performance wont really matter much yet. youll figure that out as you progres.... id say just stay away from the "poseur" classics, like the obvious dcs and etnies and all that. but basically anything you like. its up to you anyway..

What's up bro? Welcome to Ramp Rage, the collest skate'n form anywhere. I would get a blank, they're cheap and they work well. I'd go for a CCS blank, I like them. Also, I would get some Royal trucks, and some Baker wheels. Lucky bearings, Silverado hardware, Jessup griptape, yeah. How to take shit from nub haters? Just let it roll off your back, if they have to insult a grom for kicks, they need to be smacked. On skate shoes..Yeah, a good pair would help. I suggest I-Paths.

Hey, thanks fellahs. Those blank decks look promising, and so does the price! The shoes, on the other hand, look an ickle bit pricey.....is there a "blank deck equivalent" skate shoe out there?

the Adio Kenny Anderson shoes are very nice, they also have a rubber bit covering the toe which stops the toe from wearing uber fast everytime u drap your foot on the girp tape

Uh don't listen to this guy. Don't go through water. Ever. It will ruin your bearings. It will ruin any board no matter how good, or decent it already is.

He didn't say go through water, you misunderstood him.
I say get a Canadian Maple from blankdecks.com with indy trucks, some 54mm white blank wheels, no risers, shortys bolts, jessup grip, and bones reds bearings.

oh, and just to let you know don't be all defensive and trying to show off around better people that's the only reason I'd be mean to anyone. Just ask them for their help, skate and have a good time.

That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Have you ever skated vert on a 7.5 deck before?

Deck: Blank deck of your choice. I personally would start out with an 8" wide deck because it's pretty much right in the middle of the road for deck sizes.

Trucks: Indys, Ventures, Thunders, Trackers, Royals, Krux, the difference in trucks is pretty miniscule unless you do 8 foot drops and grind all sorts of crazy stuff.

Wheels: 53-59mm Blanks. Again...not a big difference.
Grip: Doesn't matter
Hardware: Doesn't matter
Risers: 1/8" risers never hurt anyone.
