I want to take up the 6 string acoustic guitar and I was wondering if I should get a teacher or try and teach myself for a bit and then go to a teacher? Any good companies you would suggest with a decent price range ($200 - 500)

Yeah man...I'd say learn on your own for a while. I've learned completely on my own...and I'd say I've gotten along well (electric guitar and acoustic)...but some people need some instruction...It depends on you. If you're more of a self-teaching type person, you should be fine...if not, you might need a teacher.

As far as companies...or a place to shop, go to Musiciansfriend.com ...hands down they got great prices. I've ordered I think...90% of my gear through them...and it normally comes extremely quick...which is great for the deal you get. For $200 - 500..you can definently get a decent acoustic guitar. I'd say go for a Fender acoustic, or Ibanez. Most of the Fender acoustics seem to be from $200 (at least in this musicians friend catalog) to $600. The Ibanez's are a little bit more modestly priced..but I prefer Ibanez over Fender (at least in electric guitars). You can also get a lower priced Martin acoustic...which martin's are known very well for their acoustics.

If you were going for an electric, I'd suggest fender or an Ibanez..but Martin's quality in acoustics is much better, since that is their specialty. I hope everything goes good man..and good luck.

Yeah I agree with Mike on that. Nicely said, he's a great guitar player, way better than I am...Anywho, I have a Fender acoustic, I love it. It plays great. I used to have a Tom DeLonge Strat......As much as I "USED" to love it, I HATE IT NOW! I sold that guitar....I'm getting an Ibanez by the end of the month. Just pluck away whenever you can. And read up on anything you can. Just good luck with it and keep in touch with you guitar....Most people give up on them! Don't be like that though! When you get frustrated remember, life is too limited to get mad over something that is supposed to make you happy! Kind of like skateboarding! Learn away and good luck again!

Thanks a lot for the advice everyone. I think I will get a fender 6 string acoustic and just get some tabs off the internet and practice strumming and switching cords. Switching cords seems to be the toughest thing right now but I'm sure I will eventually get some good guitar fingers.

Good choice. Don't worry about switching the chords..that takes time, like you said. It took me a long time to get fast with switching chords, now...it's effortless. As for some guitar tab websites, a couple of my favorites are..

www.mxtabs.net
www.ultimate-guitar.com
www.tabrobot.com

Mxtabs is my favorite probably...but you decide. Also...throw me an e-mail at mike@physicalhazard.com ...gotta keep me updated how your playing is...I love helping out with guitar stuff...

www.tabcrawler.com is good also... but i agree that mxtabs is probably the best.... ummm first just get to know ur guitar (like learn where each fret is and how to read the dotts) then start with easy songs like "smells like teen spirit" or "brainstew" then learn harder songs as u go on

Hey- good to see the Martin Guitars got mentioned. They're made in my town (Nazareth, PA). I was thinking of picking up either the guitar or bass as well. I can't decide which one to play. My mom has an old Fender Telecaster, so I wouldn'd have to buy a guitar, unless i played the bass. So i don't know.

i play mostly bass, but of some of the accoustic guitars i've tryed, i'd say Ibanez has the best sound. i also prefer them for basses :D

My next guitar is definently an Ibanez. I like fender, but their designs seem to stay around the strat style..I like Ibanez's "flare" in their guitar styles..plus, I'm replacing the humbucker pickup on the Ibanez I get...most fenders have 3 single pickups...Hum for me!

It's from around 1975 or so. It's in good shape, it's just missing some strings. She only played for a year or so, and it's just been sitting in the case all these years.
