making movies-HELP!

Hey guys, me and my freinds are thinking about making a movie, nothing big, we all havent been skating for that long. Do any of you know any free downloadable programs to make movies, add music transitions pictures, if not has anyone heard any good things about Windows movie maker, I have it but I'm not sure I should use it yet.
