View Full Version : Josh, Pro?

Ok I feel that something needs to be said about this and I feel that I have the right to voice my opinion. I have been a member of this site for nearly a year now but I can only imagine that my profile will be slated and probably banned for mentioning this so I have decided to post this under a new account.
Onto the main issue
Firstly, I don’t mean to cause any offence by this and I admit that Josh Perez is a better skateboarder than me but then he has been skating for what, 5 years I have only been going for just under 2 years. This doesn’t take away the fact that I don’t think he is, at all, good enough to be a pro.
Now I am not saying that he isn’t good enough to be sponsored, because he is, and there is now doubt that he has put a lot of effort into FIGHT, but recently with the whole turning pro thing, well I think that that is a bit over the top.
I mean in the Blueprint video “Lost and Found” Neil Smith switch varial heelfilped a double 3 set and switch heelfilped a triple 3 set, Mikey Wright switch backside heelfliped a 10 set and both were only am’s, at least at the time the film was made. Ok, so maybe this isn’t Josh’s style of skating. Chewy Cannon pulled a 270 nollie to backside tailslide to fakie during his section and again, only am, (at the time the film was made). These where only tricks in the middle of their section and the last video I watch of Josh Perez, “Bullet and a Target”, or something like that (witch was when I first heard about him turning pro) his FINISHING trick was a kickflip backside lipsilde on a barrier. I mean Mikey Wright does this down a 8 set hand rail and again it was only one of his middle tricks. I mean there is a guy down my local skate park that I see every now and again that can switch 360 flip the funbox there and he isn’t even sponcered. I can’t even recall seeing josh pull a switch 360 flip on flat ground.
Ow, and secondly, is it me, or do people suck up to Josh and the whole FIGHT! Skateboard thing. I mean yeah, promote the company that you like but people around hear treat it like is the God of all skateboard companies. Really, do you think buy sucking up they are going to sponsor you.
I know that FIGHT! Skateboards has the right to make whoever they want a pro for their team and that me saying this isn’t going to change the fact that he is turning pro but I felt in such away that I needed to say something.
Sorry for any hurt feelings I caused but I had to give my opinion.

Sorry Popwar, I had to respond. :-1:
Hey bro, I feel you have the right to voice your opinion also. Don't understand why you would make a new account for it though. Maybe others will follow suit...get RR to 10,000 members that much quicker. You don't have to worry about being banned and shit for being honest. Just seems like a pussy move to me.
You mention Blueprint (Love em), I don't think I have to point out that FIGHT! isn't as big as company's like Blueprint, Cliché, Flip, Element, Baker etc etc. I hope we will be as big as those guys in a few years, time will tell. Anyways, I believe we are building a solid team for our stature and making pro for FIGHT! will probably be a considerably harder task in the future. I imagine their plan is for me to grow as a skater as the company grows. Either way your right about their right to make whoever they want a pro. Guess you would have felt better about it if I said NO! keep your board and your money! Someone on Ramprage might feel slighted. I know the point your trying to make is that there is alot of skaters out there that are much better than me. True. I would love it if Neil Smith and Mickey Wright skated for FIGHT! But what do you think the chances of that happening are? Shit why don't I just ask Don Nyugen to come on down. Sponsored, Ams, and Pros come in all shapes and sizes and the requirements that dictate such differ from company to company. I'm fairly sure most people can grasp that concept. FIGHT! is not Blueprint. But the Decks are soo sweet aren't they!
In response to what others do on film, I really don't concern myself too much with it, I do what I do, you like it or you don't. If I'm making a clip, I don't really look at the order, I just throw it up there and edit to the music as best I can. I had no idea someone was out there making a list of what I've done and comparing it to others. No switch 360 huh, ok I will get one on film, maybe FIGHT! will add it to my part for whenever we decide to put out a vid. Are you sure you wouldn't rather see a 540 kickflip? I have a mountain of tricks I need to get on film by this summer.. I'm so lazy!
You also mention that you think people suck up to me. I think your confusing sucking up with support. This is Ramprage bro, haven't you seen that we try to help and support each other? I receive email everyday from skaters thanking me for inspiring them to keep skating. To me, that's some powerful shit, and I'm stoked that I could make such a positive impact on these peoples lives. I hope to continue the trend. Also love reading the hate mail to, so if you out there...waiting for the next one. lol
As far as FIGHTS! decision changing, you will be happy to learn that after reading your comments they have FIRED! my ass and sent the boards back to the distributor for destruction. Waste of fine Canadian Maple if you ask me.
No hard feelings though. Peace.

I'm a very supportive FIGHT! fan watever...and thats not me sucking up its how I feel ya know!!!!and don't make a new account just to voice your opinion...I mean...if I didn't like something Josh said...I would bring it up to him...don't make new accounts he can just trace your isp or whatever code.

you have the right to voice your own opinion, your entitled to your opinion and your not gonna get banned for sayin it (or at least you better not be).
true, josh isn't as good as some others, but fight! isn't as big of a company either. it all comes down to dan's decision, if he feels that josh is good enough and wants to cut him in on the profits then thats up to him, hes the boss. if you got offered to be pro would you turn it down? i know i sure as hell wouldn't. if dan wants josh to be pro then cool, and i'm just stoked for josh and his new pro model.
plus you have to think of it as a marketing thing on dan's part, how many skaters are on here that respect josh and even look up to him? i think fight! will be sellin a couple of more boards just because its got josh's name on it.
he's good, he's young, he's got plenty of time to grow and progess. congrats on your pro model josh!

i wouldn't say sponsor skaters are pro. i would say pro's are the cream of the crop. the top dogs. when you compete in world wide events and place in the top 20. then you can be called pro. intill then you are only sponsors skaters with a foot in the door to become a pro. others will just have to work harder to be come sponsored or even become pro.

But don't get me wrong, he is a cool guy. He has skill when he skates, and has awesome style. He certainly has the skill to be pro, skating for FIGHT!

I love Josh, he's a great guy and a great skater to boot, but I don't know if he can be considered a pro just yet.
But what I really don't understand is why you take offense when a skilled and talented skater gains well-earned recognition.
As for Fight, they're just another company. I'm glad and pretty psyched to see Dan getting off the ground and getting a name for himself here on Ramprage, despite my reign of terror. When he goes multi-national, I can say I was there at the start. And he likes Fear. Another man making his attempts at making a living and giving us a quality product. I have nothing going for, or against, Fight. As far as I've heard, they sell a top-notch deck. Fight will be my next deck I skate, so that I can test for myself what all the hype is about, but until I get any funds, i will have to go on the members' word and assume that they skate great.

Josh is definately at LEAST in the top 3 skaters on this forum.. and BOY does he deserve the sponsorship and pro status, have any of you seen the amount of work he has put into his videos?, the FIGHT website? and THIS very forum?
He has helped out an up and coming company and has done it INCREDIBLY succesfully.
MAYBE, just MAYBE he isnt as good as some other big companies but he's 16, and he's not Ryan Sheckler, nor shall he be anytime soon but BOY do I love his videos, he travles his ass off just to get footage, by his OWN means of transport, unlike these 'pro's' who get everything done for them so they can focus their talents more.
I'm not saying he deserves pro status for his abilities on a board, but i think he deserves it because he is one helpful, stylish and generally nice, mofo!
He is a pro and deserves it... But VoicedOpinion, I would probably take you more seriously if you had the guts to stay on your origional profile. But some good points were made both ways.

Don't call off the "sucking up" theory just yet, buckoo.
I've been talking to people on AIM that go here, and they've personally told me that they've been sucking up to get a free deck and cause they're hoping to be sponsored.
I just wanted to share that little fact with you. SOME people actually do suck up, but yeah I think MOST people are just supportive.
I think it's weird how FIGHT! seems like the official company of Ramprage now.
You can't say anything bad about it without worrying about getting banned, and there have been so many FIGHT! threads, it doesn't seem right.
I think it's cool that Dan is doing well with his fresh company, but I'm sure there are other members with their own skate teams and companies. And what happens when they make a thread about their crap? It gets classified as spam and is deleted.
_________________________________________
Anyway, in response to the original topic: I think that Perez is well talented, and I don't think Dan is really gonna kick him off the team just because a man with no name doesn't like him being pro.

Sucking up is what your little brother does to get you to let him hang out with you and your friends.
I've always been very impressed with the amount of support that does happen on this site, the way skating should be. I'll also always give extra support to our homegrown compnies such as Dans, he's in it for all the right reasons as compared to the conglomorates.
As for Josh, pro, not pro. I don't care. He's a cool dude with good skills who was fortunate enough to hook up with a company willing to back him. More power to ya bro. Best of Luck!
Too many of our young skaters today seem to have lost touch with what skating is all about. Getting sponsored, getting your own models, turning pro is all good, but I truly hope that's not the reason any of you started skating. It's all about a good time, if more good things come your way, Bonus.

Okay, correct me if I'm wrong, like really do, but Fight was set up by a member of these forums, makes 3 different decks, including one pro model form one of it's pro's. Why should you compare it to Blueprint, a multi-million dollar/pound company, with 10+ pro's on the team and countless number of decks, and wheels and bearings and things like that. What I am basically trying to say is it's not a very big company, so doesn't have the best pro's in the world, and not a very big inventory of products, but don't get me wrong, from what I've seen/heard Josh is an amazing skater so, erm yeah coool...

Dan a big supporter of the skating world. if you don't have money and you broke a board. he will take IOU intill you can get cash. for alot of kids still in schoolt thats awesome. they don't always have access to cash to get one on the spot. or even hold a little best trick contest off the box out of complet random. not many companys or shops will do that! so that is what sets Fight! above the rest.

Wow...this thread's gotten huge in the matter of a couple days...
But anyway...it seems some people here that i've seen really like, worship fight! but those are the few...I dont think people should hate on fight! just because they dont have the best pros in the world...its still a small company from what i've seen, but I'd have to say its appears to be growing. It's kind of like thinking a musician or athlete is bad just because they made it somewhere...and thats what fight! has done. Of all these people with the empty threats of making their own company fight! took it to heart and actually made it somewhere.
Now I havent been here too long but I have seen some and this is based on what I've seen. Whether or not other people have different opinions then okay, say your side, but this is how I see these things

Yes, Josh is paid. The details of course are between us. But, he makes more than I do on a deck, I can tell you that.

Wait wait Josh is Feaky Styley wow that's pretty cool. I always thought that if you were sponsored ment you were a pro. Now I know that that if you have your own deck means you're pro.

^ yeah theres usually 3 levels of sponsorship. theres pro, which is getting paid to skate for them, usually having a pro model deck or signature shoe. then theres am, or amature, which is getting free stuff pretty regularly and with bigger companies you usually get a small section in the video and do some touring with the team. then below that theres flow, you get free stuff, usually just not as often and if you sponsored by a bigger company then you don't do alot of traveling with the team, stay at your hometown and you might do a little demoing with the team if they come to your town, or nearby.
