View Full Version : Need Some Curb Waxing Tips

Ok, so I just bought an AWS Curbwax bar for $4. I think I'm going to wax the curb this weekend that way I have time, but I've never done it before. So, before I start on the wrong foot, is there anything I need to know about waxing a curb or any tips you guys got for me? And some other questions:

How much of the bar do I need to use?
Does candle wax work too?
Does surf wax work too?
Do I need to wax my trucks too (so I can 5050)?
What's the easiest grind to do on a curb?
Do I need to layer the wax? (Wax it, let it dry, wax it let it dry etc)
How often do I need to wax it? (Everytime I try to grind...etc)
About how long does it take?
Are Yellow/Red Painted curbs better to wax then non-painted?
Does it work better when it's hot out?
Will It would work if I microwave the wax for a few seconds so it's nice and soft?
Also, has anyone tried this AWS wax before, and how good is it?
And any other things I need to know?

Phew. That's all I can think of. Sorry for all the questions, usually I would just go for it, but I don't want my wax to go to waste, becase I dont have anymore money.

Thanks :-41:

EDIT: I did a search too, but nothing was real helpful.

How much of the bar do I need to use? You put enough so the cracks or whatever in the curb are completely filled up.

Does candle wax work too? Wax = Wax (Except for surfwax) Buying "AWS" wax isn't really different.

Does surf wax work too? Surf wax is made to make your feet stick to a surfboard.

Do I need to wax my trucks too (so I can 5050)? No.

What's the easiest grind to do on a curb? 50-50, Crooks, Nose slides, tail slides, 5-0's, Nosegrinds, (I don't really like smiths and feebles on curbs, but hey, if you want to try them, go ahead.)

Do I need to layer the wax? (Wax it, let it dry, wax it let it dry etc) No.

How often do I need to wax it? (Everytime I try to grind...etc) You'll notice if you need to re-wax it.

About how long does it take? About 15 seconds for 3 feet or so.

Are Yellow/Red Painted curbs better to wax then non-painted? Painted curbs are SOOOO much easier to grind on, sometimes you dont need wax for them. Unpainted curbs need wax, and maybe 4-5 pushes.

Does it work better when it's hot out? It doesn't matter.

Will It would work if I microwave the wax for a few seconds so it's nice and soft? IDK, never tried.

Also, has anyone tried this AWS wax before, and how good is it? Wax = Wax.

And any other things I need to know? You can buy candles at the dollar store, and they'll work fine.

And, remember this is what I like to do. Don't blame me if you don't like it.

Yea, brand name wax is mostly hype. Wax is wax like the other guy said. I go to the candle factory and buy a dozen for less than what you paid for one stick of wax. I've never tried microwaving the wax, but there was this one really rough ledge, so me and some guys used a blowtorch to apply it, and it worked fine.

Dont get into a fight about this but dont buy candles, they dont work well. Remeber when 5050 curbs to visualize it. dont be afraid and get both trucks on.

I bought Ledge butta on m holidays,,, Ill admit I bought it just because it looked liek the funniest product for skating, but I was happy I did, it worked beautifully, better then a candle, u might even say,, my grinds were smooth as "butter" :p

Thanks for the help loganownz...and everyone else.

Does anyone think it would work if I used regular white house pain to paint about 4 feet of curb, and let it dry, it would make it easier to wax/grind? (Becuase I don't have any painted curbs closeby)

I just use some candle wax, but I put it on the curb a couple ways. one way is to just rub the wax on for a while really hard. One is to light a candle for about an hour so you get some wax in liquid form then just pour it on the curb. An other is to take a lighter and light the side of the candle for a minute so it becomes more soft so it's easier to rub on the wax. The last way is to just rub it on but once on the curb rub it with your thumb and take a lighter and light over the wax on the curb.

I gotta give it up though, even though candles work, Ledge Butta works wonders on concrete.

Microwaving- Crayons, Vegetable Oil, and Candle wax works fine.

Just chop up the crayons and candles.

Don't crayons just made it sticky?

another thing you can do (its kinda dangerous) is to put the wax on thick then pour gas on it then light the gas so the was kinda melts into the cracks of the concrete

wax isnt to grind on, its to lower the amount of friction.

yes, painted curbs are better. i can grind about 20 feet on a painted curb, without anyone ever skating it before. theyre great.

to get a new one started, wax it a fair amount, go fast, and 5050 with your weight a little back so you push your board foreward more and its got more force behind it. or if youre any good, do a fast 5-0 because its easier for your board to keep going since youre behind it.

do that a bunch, every day you skate there, and eventually itll be good.

Depending on the amount of crayon you use, it may get sticky.

Some just like it for the color-

Or the cool smell.

try this...put some wax in a metal thingy and hea it up until it melt, then put a little of olive oil or something(just a little) then put it in the freezer to harden..go out side and grind the curb...gud luck on grinding....

no, not really. at the side of this shopping center, we waxed up like in total, 3 sections of this yellow painted curb, it's perfect for lines, and slides nice.

Do you feel bad skating streets that don't technically belong to you?

Don't fret about it. You wax it, you skate it, it isn't even evident that you've waxed it in the first place.

Anyway, I just use candles. Cheaper, and they work just as well. Also, yeah, painted curbs are better because they've already got that extra "slip" from the dry paint rather than the roughness of the raw concrete.
