OK there are basic capture methods(dont worry about super8 film i cant answer that)! .......NO USB! firewire is the answer and if your camera doesnt support that there is analog capturing.
Firewire capturing- there is already a big stickied thread all about it READ up. (most mini DV all i think) use firewire.

Analog capturing- this involves using your A/V cables (red/white/yellow cables) and special software ... here is a $80 one off B&H DAZZLE (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=335541&is=REG&addedTroughType=search) .... some HI8 cameras (older) will use this method... newer HI8 will use firewire.
