ok so its hard! i still dont have the guts to drop in a mini half-pipe...however,my question is after u drop in and u skate to the other side,do u need to switch,(180 spin to face the new side) or just move backwards.hope someone understands what im saying..thanks!

Once you drop in kick turn the opposite wall and learn to pump the transitions to maintain speed.

It's not a manual, you lift the front up and turn either frontside or backside a 180 and come back down the transition.

No, that would make you lose speed. You just do a regular kickturn.

kickturns are when you lift up the fs and move it left or right. usually on a half pipe, you kickturn 180*

Yeah. For most people, a kickturn consists of rolling up the halfpipe/quarterpipe. lifting up the front of the board, turning 180 degrees left if youre goofy and right if youre regular, puttin the front of the board back down then riding back down the half/quarter pipe. You can also do it spinning other way though but most people find it easier that way. Skaterat's definition is the best way to describe it.

Forget the kick turns, thats a waste of time when your starting out, before you learn how to drop in, just go into the middle of the half pipe and ride up one side, and learn how to transfer your weight going up and down each side of the ramp to gain speed, eventually you will be able to get up very high, if not all the way up the ramp.
But without this basic skill, doing anything on a miniramp is pointless. As far as dropping in goes, just go out and try it a few times you'll probably fall but dont worry about it, just make sure you start on a 4ft or something. And make sure you lean forward, that is key...you can't be afraid to lean forward.

I think even 4ft is a little too high for someone who hasn't done it before. When I first dropped in, I fell face flat on the ground and nearly broke my jaw, but I fell pretty hard...I gave up half-way through the drop-in, as if I expected to fall.
The key is to just commit. Put your foot at the front trucks, and then just throw all your weight forward. You'll roll down rapidly, and make sure you evenly distribute your weight when you get to the bottom. Chances are you'll fall the first time, but everything is scary the first time. Soon dropping in will become second nature.
When you're going up the halfpipe, lean back. Otherwise you'll slip out and do a nice little faceplant on the pipe. When you're rolling back down (either after you've kickedturned, or in fakie) lean forward a little more but not too much.
Coming back in fakie is simply rolling up, then rolling back down backwards.
Kickturning...you roll up the quarter, put a little bit of pressure on the tail and bring the board around 180 degress (left if you're goofy, right if you're regular) and roll back down.
It might seem confusing at first, but eventually you start doing it without even thinking.
Good luck.

i first tried on about a 3ft halfpipe then hit a crack and landed on ma knee. it still hurts. i really should see a doctor about that.
the key thing i remembered when i started was slamming my foot down.
even though i didnt have to, i slammed my front foot down as hard as i could just to make sure i wouldnt manual down. dont worry about goin up the halfpipe until youve learnt to drop in, you can just jump off ya board.
