Obviously, getting hurt is part of skateboarding. It's pretty much unavoidable. Here's my question. Whenever I'm out there learning tricks, I feel like there's still a part of me that's afraid to get hurt and is making me hold back. How do you guys tackle the psychological part of skateboarding - that is, freeing yourself from the fear of injury and just going for it?

Just think, "whats the worst that can happen?" Usually, it's a rolled ankle, broken foot, ect. Nothing life altering.

Or remember that it is more likely to get hurt in almost any other sport, including golf!

No! Don't think! Thats your down fall. If you do end up thinking, think of the trick you are doing and nothing else. Otherwise you will just psyc yourself out.

Think this:

"If I **** this up I could possibly die after being in a comatose state after 37 years and having nurses scoop the shit out of my ass"

That should be motivating enough NOT to **** it up and ride away smooth. ;)

Nah, the one that purposely injects you with a liquid Alkaline metal instead of your daily painkillers.

Control over the board, when I've got a good sense of where my feet can land and where they can't in order to keep me moving, that is what helps me not be so scared. If I'm haveing a good day and consistantly landing my tricks I'm game for bigger stuff.

usually if im trying something new that seems rly hard if im at my house i wear a helmet while trying that trick until i get it down, then i take the helemt off. i just learned bs boardslide today, and i was afriad of falling, just go for it. oh and try to skate ur best when trying something new or something that looks hard and you'll be most likely not to fall.

i try not to think about it, i just start pushing and then i have to pull the trick and my mind is clear. right now i'm recovering from a badly sprained ankle tho... but that was more of pushing myself when i wasn't feelin the trick.

Haha awesome. Well said.

If I'm about to do something I REALLY don't want to do...because of fear...I think about how disappointed I'll be in myself if I go home without learning anything new.

But the above are right, just DON'T think.

wearing a helmet which isnt big but keeps u safe from head injuries since they are probably ur worst u can get. When u wear a helmet u dont need to worry about ur head so uve got 1 less thing to make you be scared of the trick. SO when u do it, u hardly ever land on ur head but if u do u no u wont get hurt.

Yeah, protective gear is always good. Who cares if you look like a douche; once you're comfortable with the trick, you can free skate it?

I just go for it. If it hurts, then I just get up and walk away from it, laugh to myself and tell myself I'll get it next time.
When you DO fall and hurt yourself it does set you back becuz I find that I'm a bit scared of gettin hurt again. I just go for it again until. It's funny when I fall so many times and then get it an hour later.

If you always wear protective gear and and never feel a real bail, you're never gonna go for anything unless you're wearing your gear. I'm not saying protective stuff is bad, just don't use it for everything. Unless you want to.

around 2 months ago i experienced my first head smack. i was ollieing up this 2 i've done 1,000 times and i got hung up on the top, and its like a 2 stair, 4 feet of a platform, then another 2, and when i got hung up, i flew forward, past the next 2, and just smacked it right on the sidewalk. it was the front of my head, and i feel a small bump im like oh god, then my friend just watches it grow dramatically, and i look in a window and it looks like i have a second head growing. iced it a little, and took my avatar/default myspace pic! then it eventually got smaller, and now its not there.

I recomend not wearing wrist guards I recently broke my wrist as ive said about a million times and it sucks but.... I asked my doctors about wrist guards and they said dont bother to wear them because it just makes the break move up higher on your arm.

"Ain't nothing to it but to do it."

There is no way in hell that my fear is going to hold me back from accomplishing something worthwhile. When I'm hitting a ledge, rail, or big gap the only thing that's going through my mind is "push, push, push." No matter how bad shit gets, I always stick with my board...I never ditch it...if you're acting like a little girl when you're going big, you're gonna end up hurting yourself.
