You can't listen to hip-hop music. This frustrates me to no end when people proclaim to listen to hip-hop music...

There is NO SUCH THING.

Hip-Hop is a subculture. It encompasses some music genres, artforms, fashion etc.

What is Hip-Hop?

The terms rap and rap music are often used to describe the musical part of the hip-hop movement that evolved during the years, while the term hip-hop is used to describe the whole culture that evolved from the musical movement initially. The terms rap music and hip hop music are not synonymous, the last one being used to describe the implication of another element of hip-hop, the DJ-ing part. Generally, describing the music the term rap music is used.

"Hip hop music" is also erroneously used at times to describe related genres of music, such as contemporary R&B, which are primarily sung, probably for increasing their commercial appeal; while singing is commonly present in hip hop tracks, the main vocal (if there are vocals) is always rapped.

There are 4 elements of the Hip Hop subculture:

1) Break-dance: the dance form which, employs a high standard of difficulty and technique

2) Graffiti: illegal street art, which often appropriate the actions of advertising

3) Turntablism: a form of bricolage, utilizing music from any genre to create a new beat

4) Rap: lyrics which are spoken rather than sung, utilizing metaphors, similes and play on words

I'm still gonna refer to that style of music as 'Hip Hop'. Just makes things simple.

I would say that was true in the late 80s but nowadays i'd refer to rap as most of the crap mainstream kids rappers and hip hop as proper groups who haven't decided to be like that all of a sudden to cash in.

I'm still gonna refer to it as shit music that incourages gangs, theft, drugs, knife crimes, guns, violence, etc.

i was just going to post the same thing.

there are a lot of rappers that actually have something to say, that isn't gang related, or about drugs etc.

and to the guy who said:

as someone who is studying contemporary culture (me), i would have to strongly disagree with this statement. clearly you do not follow the underground hip hop movements, otherwise you would not have made such a statement.

the mainstream crap you see/hear only scratches the surface of the hip hop movement.

to be honest i think a more important issue is the conforming pop culture of many nations as a whole, this needs addressing more.

You know what's funny? You talk about education, but you can't even use some proper grammar. Your statement just screams "Hypocrite!" If you think we're all ignorant here, then go somewhere else, you've already made an ass of yourself. You're quick to point out others errors, but slow to see your own. I'm very happy that you're educated in Hip Hop, go have fun with that...But I will tell you now, you cannot just walk in here, and scream your bullshit. It's really funny, you come in here, act like a fool, then bitch out the mods, clean up your ****ing act.
