Actually, I've been trying to persuade my parents for years now to let me get a guitar and sign up for some learning classes. I want to play electric guitar, should I start off on an electric right away? Or should I learn the basics on an acoustic guitar first, master it, then start electric? Should I start off with some kind of starter pack? Or should I buy a better brand guitar and use that for awhile? Also, is there really any difference between the skill needed to play an electric and an acoustic? Haha, sorry that's a lot of questions. If it helps, I want to be able to play in a punk band one day.

i had a crap acoustic for a while before i got an electric guitar
If you like punk I would advise getting a used electric guitar and amp
You probably wont be needed any effects for a while, but if you so desire, get a g2 zoom. Drum machine, huge range of effects, tuner, etc. Under 100$ too.
And thats my two cents

If you're looking to learn proper technique, get and acoustic first and find someone to give you lessons.

get yourself a second hand electric guitar, and see if you can take the callouses and if you can fit a practice schedule in. if it's not your thing, you haven't wasted any money.
don't bother with an acoustic if you want to play in a punk band, you won't give it the same effort.

I don't really think getting an acoustic guitar first is really needed. I first started playing a electric, I learned all the basics on that, and then went right into writting songs of my own. You can learn the basics on an electric, but if you buy an acustic you could be stuck with one for a while before your parents buy you a new one. So go with the electric.

I just started playing a few days ago. I'm playing my Dad's acoustic, and using my fingers instead of a pick. They call it "fingerstyle" and I think it sounds awesome. It lets you do chords with non-adjacent strings without going through a middle string. Plus it just sounds spooky. I want to play like Esteban.

If I were you, i'd get an acoustic. Don't get an electric guitar pack because quite honestly, they're all shit. You can spend the same amount on an acoustic and it'll sound much better tonally than an electric of the same price.

Alright, thank you for the replies, guys. I think I'm going to go with an acoustic first, then I'll move on to electric guitar. I want to get as much practice as I can so I'll be able to play a wider variety of rock when I do get in a band. I'm a kid, so I have a lot of time to practice if I'm gonna be serious about this music thing.

Get an electric first. I'd recommend a low end Ibanez as they are great for learning on. Then once you get better you can get a better model, which I am about to do :D I've got a Ibanez GRG170dx (now called GRG70) and it's a great axe to learn on, thin neck and you can get a nice low action without buzzing. You can probably pick it up in a pack with a 15 watt amp or something.

I'd get an acoustic first. I had guitar class at my junior high, then I kind of taught myself from there (I didn't really teach myself, but after he told us how to read tab and chords, I went from there).

I would learn how to use a pick. I started off using my thumb, and it's hard to play chords and etc with fingers. Plus, a pick gives it a better sound
Sorry about double post.

i started off with an acoustic because it was cheaper...no amp etc.
picks give a good sound for lead playing and picking notes but sometimes no oick sounds better for strumming chords and finger-picking [obviously] doesn't use a pick.
