You should always wear a helmet. No matter what anyone says. I am trying to prevent what happened to me from happening to others. When I was on vacation I hit a rock on my longboard and flew face first and hit my head.. I took off half my eyebrow and got a black eye. I fI had a helmet on I would of hit my helmet, not my head. I also could of possibly had a slight concussion. Again If you don't want to end up like me then WEAR A HELMET Please.

Ha yes. Think about this. If you do everything wearing a helmet, when you take it off, you'll be pussying out to everything. Seriously, I've been skating for a while, and the only times (rarely) I fall on my head is at a skatepark.

Granted, alot of skaters don't like wearing them, to each their own but I always wear a helmet. I've seen alot, I mean alot of head injuries in my time and they're not pretty. I don't make my son wear them but when we're skating big stuff, vert/bowls/trannie he wears one on his own. He doesn't wear them when he's skating street though. (fingers crossed)

I wear them and I've not worn them. I've also hung up on frontside grinds and slammed right to flat bottom with my shoulder & noggin taking the brunt of the impact, and fallen back at a cement bowl and smacked my melon. I've seen dudes get pitched on rails trying frontside boardslides. None of it is pretty.
As far as skateparks go, I'd wear a helmet whether it was mandatory or not, but then again, I'm not street skating, either, but rather riding the trannies. For those who chose not to, that's their choice.
To each their own, but I'd rather have a cracked brain bucket than a cracked skull.

I'm really thankful for my helmet now. My parents make me wear one, and I didn't understand why until yesterday. I was trying to ollie up onto a ledge and then down a 2-set (I know it's not that amazing) but when I got up on the ledge I caught in a rock or something and flew down the stairs and just slid about 2ft on my stomach, hands, and helmet. If I hadn't been wearing a helmet, the right side of my face would probably be full of road-rash and I'd probably have a bunch of bruises.
I'm not gonna tell you to wear a helmet, I'm just glad that I do.

wow i guess more skaters here wear a helmet then i thought. personally i think helmets are annoying and agree with what China Skate said. I only wear them when my friend takes me to an outdoor park because his mom gets all freaked about little scaps on your knees or scabs, bruises, etc. if we're lucky we will only have to wear a helmet at the park. (usually full pads)

I usualy wear one. I don't wear it always doing something a 2nd or third time, but if its a first try, then its definately on.

Usually if i fall my head automatically dips into my chest and i try to fall on my back and my head therefore doesn't get hit.

You should were a helmet untill your good enough to know what will happen in any situation. After every bailing situation that is. I mean I've never come even close to hitting my head.

I know it sounds weird but I never hit my head when I fall. it always seems to keep itself up. either way, I only where pads when I try a new trick on bowls and ramps. other wise, I just go for it,

For those who don't wear a helmet skating the local park, or whatever, that's your choice and I say "rip it up." I also will say that eventually, physics will catch up to you. I will NEVER ridicule a skater for wearing a helmet, at the park or any where. FWIW, Mullen was made to wear FULL SAFETY GEAR by his father when doing flatland freestyle, which is what many skaters now call "street skating." I don't suppose anybody here is gonna dare talk smack on his skateboarding abilities, then or now.

I used to think I never hit my head skating. I thought I could always keep it up in a crash. One day I was riding my freebord and when I went to turn my wheels caught up and I was thrown onto my back and my head whacked the ground pretty good. It happened so fast there was no way I could react to it. Luckily I had a helmet on otherwise I definitely would have had some type of head injury.

True, but obviously if you don't wear a helmet, you will already have considered the consequences of busting your head open.

Rock on, China, I appreciate your posts as well as this one, as you have point there, to a certain degree. I don't want skaters to have to wear a helmet (or even knee pads, for that matter), I just hate seeing new skaters scrub when trying new tricks. The past few weekends at the park, I've seen kids trying to tail in banana peel and shoot their boards out coming too close to noggin smacks.
I like knee pads and my helmet. I typically fall to me knees when bail, although I did get pitched from my board today at the park riding across flat ground going fakie. And yes, I bonked my skull and was wearing a helmet, and I've been skating off and on since 1978.
Rip it up!

Man, I aint worried if someone wears one or not. It's your choice, 'ya know? I pretty much don't wear one, except at the local park, where the owner will kick you out if you don't have one. =\ It's all good. I've hit my head a few times, had a concussion, blah blah blah. It's all good. =)

I used to be really dumb and would never wear a helmet for anything (bmx, mx, snowboarding, skateboarding) but last year my mom got me a helmet for snowboarding and that first day I took a fall onto my head that still makes me cringe to think what may have happened had I not worn a helmet....so my conclusion is I will wear a helmet when skating or snowboarding vert or when snowboarding the park......not when riding street/flatland or cruising through powder.....just my $.02
