I'm looking around for a skateboard deck for my son. He's 11 years old, just recently getting serious enough about skating to want to build a board. I looked on eBay, and saw a nice looking ALUMINUM blank deck. They claim that it only weighs 2.2 pounds. Has anybody here used these ? Any opinions you could give me???? Thanks!!!eBay link <<< clicky (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=004&item=140031411768&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1)

You shouldn't buy off of ebay, unless you're on a tight budget. I would first go to your local skateshop (if you have one).
Depending on your son's shoe size, ask the guy at the skateshop what sizes will fit. NEXT, you'll need a set of trucks. They come in pairs, and I would recommend getting a pair of VENTURE or KRUX brandname trucks. After, you'll need WHEELS. You'll need four of them. I would also reccomend getting BLANK wheels, which means they are not brand names, just BLANK (haha, get it?) wheels. You're almost done. Now you just need bearings. There are two bearings to each wheel, so that means, 4wheelsX2bearings=8BEARINGS! It doesn't really matter what kind you get, I would just stick with the cheapest ones. LASTLY, you'll need GRIPTAPE and HARDWARE. Griptape is the BLACK stuff on the top of your board that lets your shoes grip on to the skateboard. HARDWARE those little metal things that let your skateboard hold together. When choosing HARDWARE, it doesn't matter.

Thanks guys!!
I thought that maybe the aluminum deck concept would be the "newest thing" and I was going in that direction so then he wouldn't be bugging me for one when they did come out. It was a nice looking board anyway.
He saw a few other wooden decks when he was looking over my shoulder on ebay. I'll check ebay and other sites for decks and those Venture and Krux trucks too. I've gotta be budget minded about this too - I checked it out at the skate shop up the street, and it's $150 to build a board, or $100 to buy pre-built. He's set on doing his own, and I'm buying it piece meal anyway. One part for each good report card, or major test.
Thanks again!

With a blank deck, blank wheels, krux or ventures, regular bearings, and jessup griptape, the total cost should only be around $95-115.
If your son would like to buy another kind of skateboard deck, and you don't mind spending a couple extra of bucks, (WHICH IS ALWAYS UP TO YOU, NOT YOUR SON) then I reccomend getting these decks. (No order)
- Alien Workshop
- Popwar
- DGK
- Organika
- Habitat
- Zoo York
- Anti-Hero
- Real
- Foundation
- Toy Macine
- Krooked
If your skateshop has any of these, it's a good thing. I reccomend you get one of these decks because they're just overall high quality. If your skateshop has more than one of these decks, just ask them to let your son to step on the board and decide which one he likes.
Have you considered thinking about what skateboard shoes to buy?
