a whole bunch of people quit skating, my freind who started skating the exact time and place i did and who used to skate with me everyday quit because i oved for a year and he had no one to skate with. i think the number one reason for people quiting today is because they might not have anyone to skate with. i was so into skating and then when i had no one to skate with i felt like quiting but i made some new freinds and now im back into it. it has a lot to do with commitment.

So many reasons why people stop skating. I've always had a board since I was a kid, but stopped skating regularly when I stopped having fun, in around 1990 when boards got small and wheels got even smaller. I also went to college around this same time, and that left little time for sessioning for me. This was when street skating overshadowed all other aspects of skateboarding and I didn't like it. However, I would still cruise my board to the store and what not.
I know lots of people my age who I used to skate with and although they don't ride anymore, they're still skateboarders at heart. Some can't do it due to work and family responsibilities and some can't do it any more due to physical injuries that prohibits them. The common denominator is all these people I refer to still love skateboarding.
Now I'm starting to see weekend warriors around my age show up at the park and it's cool to see dudes getting back into it.

I've been able to think up many, many reasons as to why I've wanted to quit every now and again. When I first started skating, I had this overwhelming desire to quit pretty much every day because I knew that if I skated down the street, all eyes would be on me simply because I'm a girl. After a while I started learning tricks, and as I got older, I started to become more and more aware that people honestly just didn't care. I entered a comp just last Friday. They cheer when you land stuff and they encourage you when you fall. I won stuff. They don't treat you any differently -- the skaters that are worth caring about. And the general public don't give a crap at all. Unless it's a security guard at a college. Then you run. Like I did today.
I'm doing my final year at school and I've been overwhelmed with work; so much so that I've been finding it difficult to find time to skate. So I make time for it. I agree with what they all said up there: there's a lot of different reasons why people want to quit; but in a way that's how you differentiate between the people that are truly committed, and the people that are just having a skating phase. My best guess is that your friend heard what you said, yes, but he probably decided skating just wasn't for him.
It shouldn't matter to you. Find new friends that skate, and don't quit like he did. It's always worth it in the long run; and anything worth doing requires hardship. Otherwise there'd be no reward.

Beautifully stated, crypticpoet! Nothing worth doing comes easily.

When a friend of mine got called up by Analog, they were wondering if he'd ride for 'em and he just said he quit skating because he was mad at his mom. Ahahahahaha...

A friend of mine recently quit skating, and he even said that out of the 3 of us who usually skate together, I'd be the first one to quit. Now he's quit.
He also said that I "didn't have what it takes" to be a skater.
