Wilderness

Wilderness was a surf shop located in Santa Barbara that opened sometime around '67. Owned and operated by surfer/shaper/builder Bob Duncan. Years later it closed down and turned into a sort of small communal living house, a bunch of surfers still shaping and riding the boards they made. It's still there but with a little suprise in the back. I got an invite to check this place out last weekend, here are some shots of Wilderness.

Haha that looks pretty freakin cool... That pool looks tight how is it to skate?

It's tighter than shit. Hand dug, hand poured, hand made. A little rough but like a real back yarder. Super fun but very challenging.

I would kill to live there too. The thing that sucks is right on the other side of the fence in back with all the boards nailed to it is the freeway, on the other side a freeway on ramp. This place is soon to be torn down due to freeway construction that will put it right thru that property. Could be any day, the occupants try and stay gone or not answer the door cause they know the "Get the Hell Out" notice is on the way. I'm really glad I got to skate it before it's gone.

Dude evey single one of those pics reminds me of when i was 12 browsing through Skatboarder magazine!

Sad that an old building in the middle of town.. everyone comes out of the woodwork to save it, but an icon of skate/surf culture who cares right??? Tragic.

Yea they own it but the Freeway widening project got the green light and this is one of the places up for demolition because of it (immenent domain). As Colin mentioned Wildy borders the freeway, and there is soon to be a new lane passing right through it. Sad but true.....
