whats you name?
My is Bryan
where you from?
Central California, about an hour south of Sacramento
how was skating back in the old days? and how was it different?
Although I skated back in the late 70s, my main skateboarding kind of kicked off during the skateboard recession in the early 80s. In those days, I remember there were very few skateboarders, that I can recall. We mostly street skated, and if we were ambitious, would build ramps. Usually, they were short-lived, but what we enjoyed skating mostly.
Some ways it's different now is by way that videos are really common, and there are places for people to skate without too much hassle, like the local skatepark (at least in some cases). Consequently, skaters can learn much quicker from watching their favorite skaters in action, which is great. Also, skateboarding is much more popular now, or so it seems. I think that's pretty cool, too.
How long have you been skating?
Off and on since about 1978
what got you into skating?
My dad bought my brother and I boards (Stacy Peralta Warptail 2s by G&S), and we started rolling around. We had plastic boards before that, but that warptal was my first "real" skateboard that had griptape on it. I still have the board. My cousin skated, too, and is a little older than my brother and I, so it was something we could all do together.
what made you do it?
For me, it was fun. I remember trying for hours to actually do a 360 in the driveway. It was just a challenge and fun, plain and simple
what is something you regret in the past?
Many things, I regret. Now that I skate regularly again, something I certainly regret is straying away from skating at all. Something I majorly regret in regards to skating is not taking more pictures of sessions and the friends I had in those days. Some of them I've lost touch with, some of them have passed on... Those are a couple of things I regret, no doubt.
do you think riders these days get what they deserve or do they over do it?
I'm not too sure how to answer this, as I'm not too aware of what's going on with skateboarding these days. I don't read the mags, or watch any of the new videos. But, when I think of stuff like the X-games exposure, I'm glad to see skateboarders getting appreciated for their abilities, creativity and skills. Video Games? Maybe that's pushing it a bit...
what gets you motivated when you skate?
I get motivated to skate simply because I still can. I like the notion of charging the flow bowls at the park as fast as I can. I meet up with a couple of friends at the park, and we just go for it, and have fun. I also like how there's cool parks around, and people I encounter are generally friendly. I think I appreciate skating more now than I did when I was younger because we didn't have as much to skate, at least in terms of parks where that's the main reason it's there: for people to skate it. I also appreciate it more because now more than ever, I recognize I can't skate forever. I see my old favorites like Grosso, Cab, Duane Peters, etc., still skating and it makes me wanna look forward to my free time so I can get on my board. I like it when there's dads skating with their kids and making a day out of it, and simply watching people skate, regardless of "old school" or "new school."
what music gets you going? and any final words?
I like poppy-punk rock type stuff, at least for skating. Simple, catchy songs that have some drive and make you tap your foot. I like hearing some cool female vocals, too. I like the Descendents, The Muffs, Face to Face and Overwhelming Colorfast, and Sugar, a great deal, to name a few.
My final words/thoughts are to keep skating, as long as it's fun. I'm not concerned with how good I am or am not, but simply that I enjoy it, which is more than enough for me.
