View Full Version : The clothes you wear...

This is so much crap.I can tell there are hardcore people on this site, metalheads, punk rockers as well as the occasional avril lavign fan.But do you think the clothes you like to wear should determine the way you act the music you listen to and/or if you are a ***** or not? This is what I just got through talking to one of my friends about.See, Im one of those people who if they see something thats cool they want it but normally dont have enough money for it.Iver been wanting forever to go into a hot topic store and buy a complete wardrobe NOT because my friends do it NOT because its the way the cool people dress and NOT because Im trying to be someone Im not.So today I had some money and I was gonna go and buy some new clothes that Ive ben wanting for a while. I told my friend I was going and she freaked and said "no sean dont go do it.Youre a skater not a punk. I fyou start dressing like them then youll get called a ***** for a long time.At least until you prove yourself..." I was ready to scream. The person I was talking to had no right to classify me as a skater because she hardly knows me, and whats more is if I went out and started dressing like someone else its not because Im a ***** and it shouldnt classify me as a skater, a punk, a prep, a goth, and so forth.I just dont think people should be so judgemental.I can understand if they were shocked because I completely changed my way of dress but I shouldnt get ridiculed for it. just because I dress differently one day has nothing to do with how I act inside.Theres more to me than 4 wheels and a piece of wood.I guess people just automattically think that if I dress like a punk I cant be a skater. What the F is up with that...I just wanted to know what you people thought cause well...its probably happened to one of you.

i didn't read all that but i think i got the jist of it. Clothes don't matter, its the inside that counts.

its happened to me. i hate it VERY much so.i shop at pacific sunwear and hot topic, and i hate most of the clothes i own, because they would classify me in the "skater" or "punk" category. i hate it. and that is EXTREMELY messed up, that the person said you couldnt shop there because you are a "skater". i dispise how this world's people are classified becuse of the clothes that they wear. wear what you want. and tell eeryone to f-off if they have a problem with it. i wear clothes from hot topic and pac sun, people have called me "punk" i hate it. sure i listen to the music and go to the shows. but i NEVER classified myself as a "punk" a good friend of mine today said something to me when i got mad at all the false people, i said the should be a "punk" genocide. and then she said something like "well then you're going to die too" and i as ready to kill her in the face. and i kinda tweaked on her. i cant stand it when people get classified by the clothes they wear. its shit. and the shit needs to stop.

i thought clothing was just there for covering ure balls and boobs from the general public... and to keep u warm... then theres all this, "only cool people wear Ecko. Only gay ppl wear k-mart crap." I just put on the clothes i find in my dresser and just style it out.

i semi get what you are saying nollie but the part where youy say there is more to you than 4 wheels and a board, well thats what a skater is. a skater is known for having a board with them when and where ever. i am the only one in my town that skates and i always have my board with me. so when people see a skateboard i am sure that they think of me. ok and the clothes ordeal. to me, if i like a skateboard company or a snowboard company or do graffiti and want ecko gear then i will get it. i wouldnt wear any ripped up clothes so i have seperate clothes from school and skating, but i like to wear what is comfy and what matches. you cant really tell if someone is a skater unless they have some type of lable whether it is the worn down ollie area on there shoes or skatecompany logo on there hat. sometimes theres no telling because they dont lable themselfs as a skater. i think we can all tell skaters from *****s, they just dress in a wannabe style which you can tell is a fake style. every time someone here get a pair of skateshoes i make fun of them because i know i am the only one who skates but it would be diffrent if they skated but there just wanna'bes

i agree with all of you. it doesnt really matter of what oter people rthink of you its what u think of yourself.i wear jncos like all the time and i know they are out of style but i dont giv a ----.ive been wearing them for a while too. they comfy school and skate clothes. i wear vans and circas cause ther good skating shoes. not cause they are fasionable.most of the people in my school are skate *****s/preps. i not saying im like mister 'naile every trick' guy cause im just learinig but i dont pose like im a bad ass skater or nothing. i just wear whats comfy and right for me. hope everyone else feels the same. later

hey guys i know exactly what you mean. but unfortunately thats how our society is. just a question though. do you label other people at all? i bet you do without even realizing it. its probably the same thing going on here. the world is big on stereotyping. you just have to get used to it, i guess. i used to complain every day about how messed up everyone is with stereotypes and whats cool and all that. then i got tired of hearing myself whine so i just decided to live with it. you cant change how people think, so just learn to deal with it in your own way. dress how you want to dress, act how you want to act. your the only one that can define who you are, so be true to yourself. other people will know it if you dress exactly how you like, instead of how other people think you should dress. everthing you do should emphasize your personal style if your true to yourself. haha i guess i think about this kind of thing a lot. basically, what im saying is this: be true to yourself.

That sucks hard, I'm glad people don't use "labels" down here. That's strange how she told you you'd have to 'prove yourself' as a punk or whatever. That's messed up. Anyways, for real, do whatever makes you happy, your true friends won't rudicule you for changing the way you dress and forget those who do because then they obviously don't have lives if they're so worried about yours.

I completely agree with you FlipKid about being who you are not what people want you to be. But why do we try to put people into categories any way? I mean i dress the way i want to (normally some shirt sometimes a skating one, and a pair of jeans) and i listen to mainly metal stuff with some punk and Ska thrown into the mix, and i hang out with ALOT of different people. ok that was to set up for a story I’m going to tell you that happened to me last year. Near the end of the school year this girl came up to me and asked me " What are you?" i had no idea what she was talking about so she said " you look kinda like a punk, but you skate, but you listen to that metal stuff so i was wondering what you are?" I had never thought about this before so i told her "well i guess I'm me" she didn’t understand this and walked off kind of disgusted. the point I’m trying to make is that if you try to make yourself something you are not just so people will accept you, there is something wrong with that. it does not matter how you dress or where you shop or what you enjoy to do. You cannot classify people everyone is different and people need to accept that not everyone wants to act one way or another. and when other people try to liable you don’t let it bother you, because you are not like everyone else is, our differences are what makes us human. And classifying just takes away some of that

i see what alot of you are saying, you dont want to be categorized by what you wear. but for me i just usually wear a white t shirt and some khaki pants or shorts. there are days when i want to go out in some skate related clothing and days when i want to wear my creased dickies. it does suck to be put into a category but sometimes the only way you can tell if someone skates is what they are wearing whether its the shoes sweatshirt or hat that is what lets you know if someone skates.

I have to wear a uniform to school, but think- people still categorize me for what i wear even though we have UNIFORMS!!
-People judge you on the material of your shirt-
-the color of your shirt- (white or blue polos)
-how tight your pants are -and to hell with that, who ever said girls had to wear ass tight pants wasn't a girl, or was a slut or something-
-type of earrings you wear
-kind of shoes you have
-kind of socks you wear (tall or short)
-how you tie your shoes
-how you do your hair
-the kinda coat you have

and i could go on and on..
my point is, there's ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS going to be people around to tell you that you arn't wearing/acting how they think you should be. If you cave in and change how you are for them, you've lost yourself- you'd have no personality left! out of school i wear what's comfy, which is usally jeans and a t-shirt with a hoodie over it. When i walk in the mall, i don't think 'where am i "allowed" to shop' i just go where i want, i wear what i want, and i am who i want to be. and from what i can tell most people on this site are... tell your friend to figure stuff out before she gets sucked into someone else's life and looses her own.

I've never really owned a pair of skate jeans. I think they are a waste of money and people only buy them because they are skating jeans and they have something to do with skating. I skate in whatever jeans I can ****ing find. Does it matter if you dress like a prep?Prep skaters can kick some serious ass sometimes.

That's a good idea. I should try and do that. Because usually when I skate all of my pants get holes and stuff in them. Thanks for the good idea Andrew.
