View Full Version : Cheap Skateboards Vs. Expensive Skateboards

So one of my friends let me ride on his skateboard.
It's a cheap, 45 dollar skateboard.
The grip tape has smoothened out.
The wheels were blackened from the ground.
And they're pretty slippery.
Once I stand on it, it leans easily in all directions..and I almost trip.
I can't stand on it without it having to move.
[Note]: I was wearing basketball shoes.
It wasn't impossible for me to ride it.
But sometimes, I'd sorta fall back, and just hop off the skateboard.
I thought about losing some weight from my upper body to fix this problem.
And I want to skateboard and do tricks and stuff.
I've been looking into building one with a budget of $200.
Along with some skateboarding shoes.
So is it my friend's skateboard that's the problem, or is it just me?

did you say build a board?
sorry and i hate to break it too you but it was prob you
but you can work on that
you should start out with a blank deck (http://www.blankdecks.com/)
some nice trucks (i like krux, indys, or thunders) (http://shop.ccs.com/browse.do?categoryID=49&sidenavTrack=skate.trucks)
any wheel will do (http://shop.ccs.com/browse.do?categoryID=61&sidenavTrack=skate.wheels)
and then you will need bearings (these will prob be the best for beginner) (http://shop.ccs.com/item.do?categoryID=83&itemID=5434&sizeFilter=&colorFilter=&brandFilter=)
then you need hardwear any will do (http://shop.ccs.com/browse.do?categoryID=101&sidenavTrack=skate.hardware)
then you can buy shoes here (http://shop.ccs.com/browse.do?categoryID=826&sidenavTrack=shoes.guys.skate)
hope this helps!

I'm going to keep practicing, once I get my first skateboard, I guess.
At this rate though, it seems I'll never balance myself on a skateboard, ever.
But I'll keep trying.
I'm really determined on getting better, and having some real fun.
Is that Jason Lee in your avatar picture, Marleyfan0?
He's the one who inspired me to start skateboarding.

Of course everyone sucks at skating at first, man.
But is a skateboard supposed to tilt easily from side to side?
Isn't it supposed to stay stiff?

Stereo's decks have recently gone down the shitter.
i've owned one and skated a few, and they've felt soooooo bad.
but hey, if you're a beginner, having a not-so-good deck won't even matter the least.
in all honesty, you should just get a level one blank complete at blankdecks, and you should probably just get a pair of shoes from anywhere.
but they happen to be skateable.
the reason you should get a blank complete is because i'm sure you're going to tail-stop and tail-drag and also attempt ollies.
that's going to wear a good board's nose and tail to nothing in a short period of time.
if our board is going "side to side" its because your trucks are lose.
stiff boards are stiff trucks.
i have my board in the middle of stiff and loose, maybe towards the stiffer side.

And what kind of board would you recommend after I'm all set?

A tailstop is when you put all your weight on the tail of that skateboard, and drag it until it stops. Its not smart, its a good way to get razor tail really quick. If you can, just drag your foot to stop, or powerslide later on, when you learn.
I'll just list some good deck companies for later on:
Zoo York
Organika
Popwar
Alien Workshop
Habitat
Toy Machine
Anti-Hero
Bueno

Anytime.
BTW, on blankdecks.com, get the California Blank or Sturdy Mold. They're the best.

Oh, ok cool.
And also, I was contemplating over what kind of trucks I should get.
I don't know whether or not to go with kruxes or independents.
And then there are the wheels.
I'm assuming I'll like the small wheels (somewhere around size 50-52) because I'd like to try and learn to ollies and maybe some pop shove its and stuff.
Would 99As be good for concrete?

Comfortable. Like your feet are just in a naturally comfortable position on it. It's easier once you get your balance.

cheap boards : They move side to side on their own. You land in the center of the board while ollieing its basically going to break. Cheap Boards are the Suck.
Expensive Boards: There good but you should be a good skater before you get a good board.
The leaning back problem is you not the board , try to stay over the board and try to keep your shoulder's straight and over the board.

It's the board. Your friend's deck is a Wal-Mart board, which he loosed up a lot and since Wal-Mart bushings are crap, the board wobbles a lot.
