all I got to skate in is these bigass hicking boots (the kind you lace halfway up your shin) and I was wondering if that would have an effect on my skating when I manage to get ahold of some good skate shoes

Well, you shouldn't be skating hiking boots. Or boots in general really. Only flat bottomed shoes should be skated. Once you pick a pair of skateshoes up, you'll be set. You will see how much better they are then your boots.

^ What he said
But if you can't get your hands on a pair of skate shoes anytime soon, just think of it this way. If you can skate in a pair of boots, it'll be super easy to skate in 'skate' shoes.

Exactly what I was thinking.
The skate shoes should be super light compared to your 2 ton boots.
