View Full Version : Hip-Hop and Skating

I've always noticed a slight connection between the two. Fashion wise, some brands and skaters definatly have a hip hop flair to them (DC, DGK, Dyrdek, P-Rod, etc) And rap songs have been in tons of parts.

What do you guys think of the merging of the two cultures? Like it, hate it, don't care?

In my opinion the linking has to do with them both being urban cultures and movements and undoubtably there will be skaters who like hip hop.

Well where ever you look you'll see both like hesh tight pants and you'll see the steezy baggy pants and gangster style. I mean, I wear pretty damn tight pants but I'll jam to some good rap or hiphop when I'm skating, not only metal or something chill.

Slyde

I can't skate pants that are too baggy. I can't wear pants that cut the circulation off to my spermshells either.

I wear mine so that they are just regular, a little more on the tight side though.

I personally don't mind, I'd like to see some more black skaters out there. I'm all for it. A sick skater is a sick skater regardless.

Slyde, only if you get like lowrise girl pants will it ****in cut your balls off. If you get normal tight pants, I get krew and ccs superslims, and they're perfect. People dont ****ing understand that there is just as much room in those as in baggy pants. I love mine for stretch.

i guess one of the great things about skateboarding is that it can bring together a bunch of people who share skating in common. slyde is right, a sick skater is a sick skater, and everyone can get along more or less.

sizlesteve
09-03-2007, 01:26 AM
Im more of the hip hop/rap skater. Thats what i normally listen to when skating cause its got a chill sound and im more of a laid back chill skater. I also think it has better flow while skating. Just my opinion though.

Slyde

I was thinking something yesterday. A state for skaters only.

Then I came to the realization that it wouldn't be right. There would be sub-divisons and arguments. The only reason skaters band together is because we are outcasted by society, so we have to band together whether we are black or white, punk or ghetto.

Yet if we are in a place where all there is is skaters, we wouldn't get along, because we ARE society, so we could oucast a certain type of skater population you know?

I have NO IDEA what that has to do with anything in this thread, btu I had to get that out there for some reason.

@
Skizzate
The main reason I don't wear tight pants is because I have chicken legs, and it would look very very odd, lol. I actually like the feel of the exteremly tight ones, except my thighs feel a little scrunched.

where i come from, anybody that dresses hip hop skater usually tags all over the town, while the punk skaters with tight pants do stupid shit and mess with police. I like to be in the middle, i would get tight pants but their $50+ for one pair so **** that

I just wear whatever i want to. I sometimes wear tight jeans (not too tight though) and I also wear baggy jeans. The one thing I can't do with though are Joggers. The cloth pants that people wear. I respect them for having their own style but I just can't deal with them.

I'm more towards the punk skating. I like to mess about as life is about having fun. If messing about, breaking into abandoned buildings or pissing off the police (only if they piss us off first :P) is fun then I will do it :)

I to have noticed the increase of hip-hop in skating more now and it is good to skate to as the beat is mellow to chill to but when I skate I like it fast paced and crazy so I listen to more heavy stuff. But hey...that's just me! :)

I prefer to watch a relaxed skater. I don't like someone overly either way. Correy Duffel sick, but he's too overtly tight pants whilst i don't enjoy Wade D'Esarma for the same reason he's too overly hip hop. People like Karl Watson are who i love to watch skate. Relaxed, different styles of music on his sections and just a fun person.

sigh, go to your pacsun, and buy the slim-fit jeans if you're that concerned with having tight-ish pants.

that wasn't directed towards ANYBODY, so don't take offense, but i'm sure some people that are reading this thread are asking that.

bullhead jeans are pretty cheap and their slim fits are basically regular jeans that are a tiny bit slimmer.

and they're what i wear.

or you can just buy some godamn REGULAR fit jeans, like from american eagle or something.

but i like the whole hip-hop styled theme in skating.

the styles are so different. and so sick.

Slyde

i dont think it matters. no culture clashes with skateboarding, skateboarding is more of a big melting pot of all different kinds of ethnicity and backgrounds.

what ive started to notice that i used to see kids with tight pants long hair hesh-esque kids but now i rarely see a skater rockin tight pants. i see alot of kids chillin in shorts and the goofyest shirt they can find. maybe thats just the scene of my town, i dont know

Haha, you little devil!

The reason I have so much is because Pacsun had a summer sale or something like that around here, and I got Pac Loot cards. For every 50 bucks you spend, you get a Pac Loot card, which is $25 dollars off on the next purchase of over $50 you get, so it comes out alot cheaper than it is supposed to be.

too bad to hear. and no one was labeling skateboarding as a hip hop thing. i see them as 2 seperate sub cultures that have an overlapping group in both.

hiphop is not a genre of music its a culture. rap is music, hiphop= culture associated with the music. and in australia they're pretty closely linked. DC has a deal with the rappers Bliss N Eso, and hilltop hoods. so in australia hiphop clothes equal skating shoes, semi loose jeans, and tee shirts that fit. not XXXL like american hiphop.

Griptape Flip

Yeah, skating is a mesh of alot of different cultures and thought processes. I'm all ****ing down with the hip-hop, and I'm down with the reggae, and I'm down with the rock, whatevvsss, right? I just live and let live with it, if someone wants to be like "I have gangsta steeze" or "I listen to punk rock and wear nut crunchers *No offense ;))*" Then I'm fine with it. I just do my own thing, and that's what alot of people should be doing, expressing themselves. Why go around saying "I am this type of skater" Just be yo'selllfff haha.

and also, i like slim fit jeans, not only because how they look, but i used to skate in like baggyish jeans, and it was really hard to do tricks, because i could barely see my board. But, I dont like super slim. I usually get like super slim a size bigger, or just slim-ish. Not any corey duffel shit. And I like my shirts big on me.

I use to think rap was gay, and only listened to rock. But, as I started to watch skate videos, and listen to older rap.. it meshed really well together. It depends, most rap is crap, most rock is crap now-a-days...

Rap and altenative both go well with skating.. depends with the mood and skating. I can't see Corey Duffel having biggie in his background jumping down huge sets, but I don't like Duffel anyways.

I wear semi tight semi baggy, just perfect.. I use to wear baggy but.. my legs can't stretch and they keep falling and always need to pull em up.. it got to be a hassle

hiphop and punk scenes arent much different. different music and clothes, yeah, but lifestyles arent much different.

one thing ive noticed is how in the out-of-skating environment, there are many different cliques.
and now for some reason, in the skating environment, theres many different clothes styles...

but anyway, hiphop and punk lifestyles are pretty much the same.. hardcore, rebellious... im not exactly sure why skateboarding picked them up for clothes, but w/e.. and yeah this thread is dumb. i was just pointing out some stuff

I wear my pants slim fit(not too tight but the level between baggy and constricting your nuts) and I hate wearing pants too baggy it just seems like everythings all over the place and its so uncomfortable for me. As for music, I listen to a lat of rap but only the gangsta stuff like common, nas, lupe fiasco, and tribe called quest and more. But i also rock out but mostly with like indie type of music not too much old school metal when i skate. I actually skate with like all black people which is funny because when places call cops on us we say cuz we're black? but yea, whoever says they listen to rap and says "stuff like t-pain, chris brown and ne-yo" im gonna call chuck norris on u

African Americans are really dependent on music and beats etc. It's just in their culture.

When I see an African American skater, and as long as he's good and not a *****. They have my respect. Some of the smoothest styles out there are performed by A.A.'s.

Companies jobs are to accomodate their consumers. I guess if that means making custom chains, oversized clothes etc. then they'll make it as long as their are buyers.

What the hell kind of stereotype is that?
Any person from any culture can be dependent on music and beats as much as any black person.

What exactly is a ***** anyways? That word is so lame in the first place.

I'm curious as to why you say African Americans? Most folks don't say Caucasian or Native American; Same applies to this. I'm trying not to assume, you know how that saying goes, but alot of people whisper the word *black* in their conversations, or emphasize it.
Blacks are equal to whatever other race there is, so what's with the special treatment and/or racism?

^shhhh. read between the lines. Music is a major cultural part of African American culture and indeed all cultures of the world. in fact, rock music (and the song black betty) originated from African Americans. And since the un-rude usage for the word bl**k is unclear, its better to steer clear of the slight chance of offending people by use of such a word. some dude got kicked off Australian radio and a $160,000 a year job for terming someone a bl*ck man.

Haha wow, Slyde, always trying to make it into such a big thing just because it is applicable to you.

I suppose it would be a stereo type, I didn't mean it to be one, but if you're looking for something repetitively then you'll find it. As well as, I don't know if having a culture that is famous and intertwined with their lifestyle of music. Is such a bad thing. Music is one of the most beautiful things in the world. I am sorry if I used the words African american's. I was hoping that I would just dodge this whole conversation we're having. It's a matter of personal values and respect. I find that if I'm going to refer to a race of people I will use one that is less offensive, one that isn't blatantly used to discriminate.
