Blayze, just because you work out and lift weights (being active) doesn't mean you can't become diabetic. I used to play football, volleyball, basketball, and go on some rigerous 10 day, 9 night canoe trips through algonquin park in ontario. I was so active but then somehow I managed to get diabeties. Oh well... I can still do everything I used to do.

well i just asked my dad who has alot of medical information since he was some type of doctor and a sf medic in the army whats up with your diabeties and he said that if you were athletic and ate all foodgroups form the pyramid then you were just 1/million to have your pancreas fail causing diabeties. he said for me that since i am working out drinking water eating rite and staying active that the sodas and sugar i put into my body dont really effect me. but he said that people of colr such as mexicans, blacks, asians have a graeater chance of getting it and my dad is mexican and all of his aunts and uncles have it along with his mom.

Im white and athletic and always ate good food. I guess I am just lucky. Or not... LOL. The thing is... I am only partially diabetic so far. My pancreas still produces a small about of insulin which helps me and I only take about 25 units of insulin total in a day. The doctors said my pancreas would eventually stop producing insulin in about 3-4 months after I was diagnosed... its now been 16 months and I'm still going strong. Doctors... they dont know too much.

This may seem like a useless conversation to some people but diabeties can seriously effect your skating. Also, there are no arguements or swearing going on and seeing as I am diabetic, im letting it stay here.

i think that medical conditions should be supported on this site because it could help people get over any type of fear or stress they have because they think that they are the only one or we could just tell eachother how we deal with it.

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles.

Approximately 17 million people in the United States, or 6.2% of the population, have diabetes. While an estimated 11.1 million have been diagnosed, unfortunately, 5.9 million people (or one-third) are unaware that they have the disease.

There are three major types of diabetes:

Type 1 diabetes - Results from the body's failure to produce insulin, the hormone that "unlocks" the cells of the body, allowing glucose to enter and fuel them. It is estimated that 5-10% of Americans who are diagnosed with diabetes have type 1 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes - Results from insulin resistance (a condition in which the body fails to properly use insulin), combined with relative insulin deficiency. Approximately 90-95% (16 million) have type 2 diabetes.

Pre-diabetes - Pre-diabetes is a condition that occurs when a person's blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough for a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. It is estimated that at least 16 million Americans have pre-diabetes, in addition to the 17 million with diabetes.

Gestational diabetes - Gestational diabetes affects about 4% of all pregnant women - about 135,000 cases in the United States each year.

I don't have to live without anything by being diabetic... I just take more/less insulin when I inject myself. Two needles a day and 4 blood tests a day.

EVERYDAY!?

mikejl29
01-24-2003, 11:12 PM
Correct... everyday. I take 25 units in the morning, 5 units at night for my needles.... the blood testing needle is REALLY small. I'm glad I can teach people about diabetes. Makes me feel special.

Kross - Axe.... technically you did answer the thread question..... but you already made a thread about your confederacy. Stop posting it everywhere. If people want to join they will... just stop putting it all over the forum.
