View Full Version : wheel size effects grinds?

I have been skating for about 2 years and have been doing grinds for a fairly long time. Most of those 2 years I've spent skating 50 mm(spitfire classics) wheels or less (they shrunk from powerslides, etc.) Recently I've upgrade my wheels and bearings. My wheels are currently 54mm flip wheels (bought them off my friend for $8, bearings included). I dont care much about the company and color, but these wheels are significantly bigger than the wheels I've always skated. When I was breaking them in by doing some grinds, I noticed that my trucks slid off the coping if I didnt balance correctly. I got used to them and now I grind almost normal. But does wheel size really effect the stability and length of grinds? thanks

I think the smaller wheels are better for 50-50's and all that. It makes sense.
the bigger ones might shrink more because the will slide

In my experience, it wheel size "affects" grinda, particularly, if you're used to riding something different than what you now have. IMO, smaller wheels will disengage from the lip, edge of a ledge, coping, etc., a bit easier than a taller wheel. A smaller wheel will also affect what part of your truck hangar actually grinds, in some cases. A taller wheel is going to potentially change the angle your board is in when on a curb.

Since you've gotten acquainted with your 55mms, you're in there. If nothing else, as long as you don't get flat spots, you'll likely get a bit more mileage from your newly acquired taller wheels.

uhh how about no?

I cant stand small wheels for long 50-50 Grinds. Check my myspace (www.myspace.com/skarecrowfirefighter) video, the long ass 50-50. I cant do that with small wheels, because they turn my 50-50's into Feeble. fast Feeble's turn into pain. Bigger wheels let you lock against the Ledge better, and wont slide over.

I intend to buy big wheels soon so I can get those at max speed, without fear of feeble-ing.
