I try to use add-ons (download helper, foxy tunes, various dictionaries), but none of them work. It says I have to restart firefox for them to work, but when I restart it, it doesn't work. Strange. Any suggestions?

you have to go to 'tools' at the top, click on 'add-ons', and click 'enable'.
