sup ladies. this is a "how to" guide for improving your ollies.
A solid and strong ollie is the most important part of making any sort of trick look good, and to getting tricks down well.
this is not a "how to ollie" guide; ollies arent like school work where the teacher tells you what to do, then you go and do it. ollies are more like juggling, where a person can tell you what to do, but then it has to work in your head..
the best way to get better at this rather simple trick is to jump over things.. simple enough you say?
first look for some sort of step which is really low, and practice ollieing up it. if you can jump onto the higher part, and can get your board to land next to you, it means you can jump high enough to ollie onto it.
This is the hardest part; honestly. you're scared of falling over, getting hurt, all that sorta stuff. this is where your friends help you. They'll push you to learn the trick, and you will. the will is strong in you. the most important part is the co-ordination in the trick; the jump, hit, and slide. you can do it dude!
height; once you've mastered the step, find a nice place to skate, then find/buy/steal three bricks from wherever you can.
first lie one brick flat on the ground so that you can try to ollie it. if you and your skateboard can get over then you bail, at least you know you can get over it.
once you've mastered the brick, lie the brick on its side and learn that. then put two bricks flat on top of each other, then turn one to its side.
once you can ollie three bricks on their sides, perhaps try standing them up on their thin side, I dk. three bricks is enough to get you ollieing down 7-8 stairs easy.
length; getting ollies long isn' really hard; stick two bricks on top of each other lying flat, then go get some more bricks. lie em flat too, but behind the two bricks, so it forms a L shape. ollie it, then get one more brick to make the length longer, then keep going.. once you can get three bricks high and three bricks long, you're getting good.
sometimes its fun to ollie boards; stack your mates skateboards up and ollie over em! mostly people will ask how many decks you can ollie, rather than how many bricks you can ollie.

do not be fooled; even these people were once ollieing over like, one board and only just making it. How'd they get so good?
practice, my good friends. you have the power if you want to. its true - iron maiden.
you've got this far? geeze. see? it wasnt that hard, was it? it was pretty fun huh :-) now go learn kickflips higher. ollie's relate to every street trick today, and what those bricks have taught you, you can take anywhere through any trick or down any stairs.
Style; like writing and painting, ollie's are better if they have style. if you have no style, you havent got them where you want them.
The best way to gain style for ollie's would be to practice them; as a sports physiologist in training, we're taught that "trained and fluid movements influence grace and beauty". Once you know how to pop ollie's comfortably, they'll naturally be more beautiful. kinda like when you write on paper; practice, and knowing what you're doing made it look better.
Also, try to keep over the centre of your board; ollieing and staying over the back truck looks silly. keeping it level in the air also looks better than having it mobbed (sloped backwards). This is the biggest style killer in the world. people have been punched for doing these.
Boned ollies also look real pretty; these are when you ollie and lift your back foot higher and push the front foot out slightly, so that the board slopes forward. stylish!
What looks best down stairs and ledges though, is a big and solid ollie. If you're only doing a 4 stair, but you ollie high enough to clear three bricks before you land, it will look stylish.
