I'm not sure about the classic, but on the older gen ipods you can put rockbox onto it: http://build.rockbox.org/
It's basically an alternative firmwire for some popular players that makes it MUCH better. Right now I have a very old Sansa e200 that I rockboxed, and I still use it everyday for school. Rockbox comes with its own games (mostly classic arcade ones, Doom, and some other user made games, which are good 5 minute distractions), but Rockbox also comes with a built in gbc emulator.
Judging by how popular ipods are, I'm pretty sure someone will port rockbox over to the Classic pretty soon.

I'm playing Pokemon on my Sansa e200 right now, and I just beat the Elite Four (agian). Pokemon works pretty fine, especially considering my sansa wasnt intended to do these things. It's only when you play the more complex gb games that it starts to lag. Anyways, I was wondering how you were planning on playing pokemon using only 5 buttons (unless you plan on using the scrolling as a buttons, but I think thats a bit awkward).

nah, the scroll is the D-pad. you simply start at the center and slide up to move up (i'm geussing it holds) and you press the scroll thing in the corners (like between menu and next) for the four buttons (A B Start Select).

Indeed, I quite concur with Juwanna.
Also, does that stuff work on the 3rdg nanos? I don't see why it wouldn't

Everytime a company releases a new player they usually use a different chip set (otherwise it wouldn't be an improvement, right?). For example, Sansa just recently released a new version of the e200 (v2), which uses different hardware. Same player on the outside, but different hardware on the inside, therefore rockbox doesnt work on it (but the developers are working on that right now). The more popular a player is the more likely it is that people who are interested will develop rockbox for it.
About the installation proces. It's pretty easy, just download the bootloader (look in the respective manuals to find the link) and the actual rockbox firmwire file. Just install the bootloader and copy the rockbox file to the root of your player (assuming it supports msc drag and drop, for ipods I think its something else). It only take 5 minutes to setup and get running once you know how to.
I recomend rockbox to anyone who owns a working player supported by rockbox, there are MANY, MANY benefits.
