how do you get a decent amount of air on them? everytime i try them i get it to stay under my feet but i don't get high enough so the board always hits the ground and doesn't get a full rotation.

Well- researching wouldn't hurt. I wouldn't believe 'no one mentions it'...since numerous times I have given tips on how to heelflip. Here it is, once more bro...
1) If you can't get the spin..jump *straight* up, with your back straight, and kick FORWARD, like you're trying to kick a dude in the sack. That will naturally make your foot slide, and flip the board.
On air..I find heelflips are one of the easiest tricks to get air on, but here's what I do:
1) Bend down with my knees, not my back. Try to keep your back straight.
2) Jump straight up, and kick FORWARD, not at an angle.
3) To get air- suck your legs up as far as you can. This is what helps a bunch. Lots of times, without knowing it, you almost get the full flip, but stomp it down (so it lands upside down!). I learned this..from watching my old heelflips on tape. Simply jump, and pull your legs to your chest, as far as you can...and you'll be set.
As a last resort, I've got a page...for heelflips:

Good luck man.
