Iam pretty sure I want to start skateboarding, but I have absolutely no Idea what kind of board to get. I've heard of Zero's and thats the only brand I know of. I have okay cash , and I don't need a flashy board. Any help will br greatly appreciated, thank you.

right dont follow a trend and buy the most expencive boards around or anything that has "bam magera" written on it. if u are new buy a blank deck(make sure you go to a skteshop to check the shapes ok)and blank wheels they are exsactly the same but half the price coz they aint got a picture. trucks i would recommend venture coz again(they are cheapish but still good) and i dout you will be ollieng down stairs or grinding through them if u are new.you also dont need ssuper fast bearings coz it's harder and scarier to learn new tricks (ollies) if your board goes flyin everytime tou lean back a little to much. so there you go a pro qulity setup perfect for newbies at half the price most beginers pay!!!!!!!

Yeah, start out with a blank. After I went through a few Rage boards (which you should NEVER do), I got a blank setup from my local shop, pre-constructed, for like 70 buckaroos. If you have to build your own, though, go for generic stuff. Abec 7s or 5s bearings, Destructo trucks (I'm riding generic trucks right now though and they are fine), reg. wheels and the whole shebang. When you start hanging out with more skate folks, they'll give you an idea of what kind of decks and bearings and whatnot that you'll want to buy in the future for what style you're developing, like dropping sets, doing grinds, or shooting vert.

Is blank the brand of the board, and what exactly are trucks?

blank is a decent 7 ply maple deck and trucks r what the deck is attacted to and holds ur bearings and wheels.
I think if your serious about learning you should go big and expensive!
dont get like the element deck with the element wheels and bearings ...etc. thats just drips of *****.
just ask the guy at the shop to put together a quality product for ya..
ya will need some shoes also...you can get a decent pair for around 40 bones.
the reason why I say go big on product is it will give you more of an incentive to learn. buy what you like and if the graphics on the board attracts you then that is what u should get.

Well thts funny seeing as he had his board and everything before jackass.

dave, i think he means that before jackass, bam wasnt known...then he was in jackass and everyone knew him and his name. Jackass has really helped him in skateboarding cause mostly people see his name on a deck, and buy it because he is a good skatrer.

lets not argue about bam, this dude needs some help and i think we should all forget about bam for the time being and halp him out.
well, try an ATM Blank, its worth your cash, its only like 30 bones, and it lasts good, but if you want a pro deck, that will last you, go with maybe a zero or anti-hero, or chocolate or somethin. id say ventures, they are medium weight, pretty good nice trucks, and dont cost alot of money. some also have a nice little warranty. i just ordered my setup off ebay for 61 bucks plus shipping/handling, i wound up with a really strong deck, some nice trucks, shitty bearings, ok wheels, nice grip. its my first setup and im happy with it, dont really worry too much about the graphic especially if you have any ledges near you that youll want to learn boardslides n such on, it will come right off. but id say get a blank, go to the skateshop or whatever, tell em ur just starting, ask to see some blanks, and get some different amounts of concave, and see which one you are most comfortable, i would reccomend a 7.5 to 7.75 inch width, with a fair amount of concave, for when you start progressing to flip tricks n such.

Alright thanks for all the help guys, Iam gonna be heading over to my local shop tuesday. One more question though, what exactly do the bearings benefit? Do they make it easier to turn and so on?
zeronoah

bearings? well, the make your weels turn i guess, its what touches the truck, the higher abec rating, the more amount of rpms they can take before they start to mess up. i would go with abec 7's or abec 5's

what r u talking about elements r great decks and wheels. just cuz someone likes one particular brand, does not make them a *****. maybe he/ she is trying to help their favorite brand by buying their crap.
anyways, if u r a beginner, dont buy/make those big, puffy shoes, like osirises. good shoes r vans, they r good for skating all arond, but theyre a bit undurable, due to softer material for the shoes. but that wont matter for u cuz ur not gonna do that much crap that rips up ur shoe if ur just beginning

be cool and cheap like me... buy a crappy meijer board (i think everyone knows what meijers is) for 20 bucks. once you've ruined that board you're good enough to buy a real board. Put it this way, if you don't like it, you only lost 20 bucks. i'm on my fifth deck now, a Black Label. Not too thrilled with it. They break way to easily. The deck i had before that was also a Label with the same problem. I had Element once and it lasted FOREVER. Truly think about elements...

get the lightest stuff you can, its not like you are going to do something to brake it. just go out and learn.

my element snapped under one of those h2's....i had a workshops that i thought would snap under my own weight off a ledge and it ended up gettin run over by a ford expedition and just bending like hell and then poppin back into place. but then i broke it casue i wanted a new deck and placed it on a rail and jumped off muh house and landed on muh board and it snapped on the rail.
