Tomorrow is my last day of high school. I have spoken with my parents, and I would like to start college early, so I will be getting my GED, then continuing onto technical college to get my associates in Network Administration. Technically I have to drop out of high school in order to do that, but that's OK with me. Why? For the simple fact that it'll be putting me ahead of where I would have been had I finished on time with everyone else. I was also behind, because of getting ripped off by about 9 credits thanks to the school...but that's another issue completely. Long story short- they ripped me off badly.
I was kind of unsure about it at first, until my admissions rep from Missouri Technical college called. We spoke, and he invited me to the campus to tour it, and have a small interview. He said as long as I pass the GED test, he sees absolutely no problem admitting me. He understands the situation too, and realizes I got screwed over, so he's willing to help.
If all goes according to schedule, I'll be starting college next school year.
While in school, it was not bad. School does suck in the sense you spend about 40 hours a week there, for free...re-learning things (in 10th, 11th, 12th). Granted, some classes are pretty damn cool, like my advanced web class, and network administration, business, marketing, etc. Also, as far as social life, school is great for that, and mine is pretty enjoyable, but I need to move on, and get working on my post high school life- not dwell on high school.
We'll see how it all continues. I thought it was very relevant, so I posted this.

I hate school, it's not classes it's not the teachers, it's more the other kids at school. They give me so much crap, I hate it. It's the largest high school in Ohio, like 1000 students or something. But I'll be going to a vocational school next year. Hopefully it will be better.

school isnt as esential as its made out to be, in fact, its useless, but the way the system works, you need it. but only cuz of that, cuz you dont need or use anything you learn, and dont ****in argue with that, do you use algebra and chemistry throughout your day? no. all school is is preperation for life, which generally sucks, you ever wonder why we are the only species on this planet that its #1 goal is to work and make money? do you see monkeys and beavers carpooling to the office, so they can rot away in a cubicle doing a job that allows no indepency? no. and thewyre doing just fine, unless we, humans, decide that we want to wear those animals and so we kill them. i dont think we should work at all, there shouldnt be money (ok, this system would only work with people like me, who arent greedy) and everyone just does whatever. you only live once (supposedly), so make the best of it, cuz you like every other living creature, will one dya DIE. until then, why would you want to do something you dont want to do?
Mrock
03-06-2004, 05:12 PM
Well, I think knowledge is good, but at the same time, there's a limit to what you should be forced (or expected to know).
I totally agree with your "you only live once, so make the best of it. Why spend it doing something you don't want to?". That's why I'm attempting to make a career in music. I realize it's risky..but life is so short, I don't want to waste it in an office, regretting not trying music. At the same time, If I fail, I'll continue on like everyone else. I can't say I'll be sad. If someday I have a wife, maybe kids (lets not even talk about that, haha), and a decent place, and the usual stuff...I'd be happy.

**** yeah school isnt free, it cost my dad 120grand to send my sister to fordham U for 4 years, and thats just tuition. haha, im going to middlesex U (or middlesex community college if you wanna be a dick about it), 1 grand a year for tuition. but its all good cuz my dad is paying for it in full. tuition, books, a car, a computer, cell phone, and hes helping me pay for aN apartment cuz theres no dorms. so i figure ill go cuz its 2 free years of living basically. also, my major is photograpy, and hes already bought me a regualr 35mm camera, but hes gonna buy me a whole digital setup if i need it. yeah. thats one thing my dad is nuts about, college, cuz he didnt go (my grandfather wouldnt pay for it so my dad enlisted and went to vietnam and then worked for New York Telephone/nynex/bell atlantic/verizon for 32 years, and now hes retired) i dont know why i just did a biography of my dad, but i hope you enjoyed it, peace

If all goes well, I'm going to Missouri technical college, to major in Network Administration this coming July. Living will be free only because I'll be living with some fam, probably...and I get my books free, because my mom is a supervisor at a book distribution place.
The downside, is that the cost of the actual classes and whatnot is going to be all mine...yay....

Private school is not cheap at all. Public school is. I believe you get what you pay for.
£11,000 per year for a private american highschool in England I believe. It becomes even more if you board at the school. Almost £18,000 I think. Thank god my dads company pays for it or I would have no chance of being here. The education is quality though. All of their courses are honours, then they offer AP and IB courses on top of that. It is expensive, but it pays off when you have good grades and apply to a university.
As for universities... those are even more of a ripoff. New York University, freshmen tuition is $42,000 before books and laptops and all that sort of stuff. At CIU, (the Culinary Institute of America), the tuition jumps to a nice round number of $50,000 per year because of the amount of food you go through.
Luckily my parents support me in everything I do and they have told me what I will get if I continue to stay on honor roll (Over 84% in all courses). All I can say is I won't have to pay for much at university. Clothes and beer will end up being my biggest expense, along with photo and stuff for my car. Oh ya, Canadian universities are cheap so my parents are happy. They are less expensive than my high school.

I homeschooled for a year, not indepdent study- and I can honestly say this about it- it sucked. It made me completely lazy. Public school makes you spend more time doing it, but from my experience, I got a lot more from public school than learning in an alternative way could ever offer me. To each his own, though.
Zac--

If I ever have kids, I'd probably be willing to homeschool them for a year or two at most. I don't know if this makes sense...but you all know I write music, and I get a lot of the inspiration from things that have happened at school, or from people I met at school. I'm glad as hell to be out of it, don't get me wrong..but I would want them to experience at least a couple of years of high school.

It's not like there is a definite answer like, "school sucks for sure", or "school is great", it's different for every person. Education does have importance, but like I've said a million times, I think it's stressed a tiny bit too much.
[Using America as an example]
Everyone here knows about the electoral college. You know it was setup because they did not believe the American people were smart enough to vote for their own leaders? This country is built by the American people, and without an education, we wouldn't be able to enjoy half of the technology we do today (of course, the asians have a lot to do with it :), but they too had to have an education to succeed as well.
So it may suck sometimes, but if you learn to make the best of it, it can be good. If you choose to say "screw it", it's going to suck all of the time.

Take my advice when I say DON'T HOMESCHOOL YOUR KIDS!!!
I'm home schooled and have been for my whole life (I'm 16 years old). Next year I'm going to a real high school and one of the only things I got out of home school was that I skipped grades witch I may have been able to do in a real school (I'll never know). The only thing I enjoyed about home school was that last year (10th grade) I finished English literature (I mean FINISHED) So now I have the most useless skill at college level and I am VERY bad at just about everything else. But enough of hearing me complain.

Like I said, I homeschooled as well. I'm well aware of what homeschooling is. People learn differently. I have a friend who has homeschooled his whole life. He is beginning college this year..he's 16. For me, it didn't work amazingly, but I think it's an experience that's worth giving a shot to.
