The back one, use the front to flip, but you could prolly flip and rotate with the front foot.

One more question...Do you spin it while the tail is on the ground? Or in the air?

i learned to varial flip before i learned to kick flip. but when i learned to kickflip i found it easier to varial. I can still varial flip better then kickflip.

rotate with your back foot, flip with your front. it helped me when i realized i flipped better when i used the tip of my toe kicking straight foward as the board rotated.
