If you have a miniDV camcorder... use a firewire connection if your camcorder has it. It's a thousand times better than USB. You'll need a firewire card, firewire cable and some editing software.
Card: about $40
Wire: about $20
Software: Start out using windows movie maker 2. You can download it for free at download.com. It's nothing special but it will give you a basic understanding of editing and it will let you dump edited footage back to your miniDV tape.

Ok so if you're using an anaolog camcorder (Hi8, SVHS or anything really) you'll need to get a capture device of some sort. Go to Best Buy and search for something called Dazzle. It's about $70 and it can capture video from just about anything.. camcorder, VCR, TV whatever.

He's new to editing so windows movie make would be his best choice to start out with. Once you get use to that move on to better editing programs. Windows movie maker is free anyway.

just gets it on the puter man. If you have an analog camera then it converts it to digital first.
