Get a miniDV cam... Sony or Canon... thats all you need.

Don't get a Hi8 camcorder. They are serious shit. You'll regret it. Spend the extra $50 and get a miniDV. You'll be able to put excellent quality video on your computer. All of those cameras are over priced anyway. Hi8 is out, anyone who pays over $200 for a Hi8 is a sucker (unless its a 3-chip of course).

Yea the Sharp is the best choice. Anything that is miniDV format is good. It doesn't have to be a top-of-the-line 3ccd supreme-O DV tape extravaganza. The cheapest miniDV camcorder you can find would do the job just fine. The only reason i'm saying this is because you you use Hi8, chances are you wont be able to edit video on your computer but any miniDV camcorder will (all of the ones i've seen at least.) But anyway, yea the Sharp is definately your best choice.

At the mo i'm using this camera (£120) and its meant for photots but it has a video feature, i bought bigger memory and its great 3.4 megapixels. Heres the main tip ALWAYS get a camera with a USB port.

NO! Not for video. USB is crap with video. Get a camera with firewire (just about all miniDV cameras have them)

I'm assuming the Sharp camera does have firewire because it says something about making professional home movies.
Firewire is a way of connecting your camcorder to your computer. It allows information to be sent to and from the camcorder, therefore you can record footage that you previously edited on your computer back on to the tape so you can play the edited footage on your tv. It's much faster than a USB port, and the quality will be a thousand times better.
miniDV is a type of tape. 8mm, Hi8, svhs, vhs etc are all analog formats. Meaning that an analog signal is sent through the camera to record your video as opposed to a miniDV tape, which does it digitally. The greatest advantage of using the dv format is the quality. A lot miniDV camcorders record at broadcast quality. If you were to edit footage using an analog source, you would lose quality between transfers (meaning that every time you record something to and from your computer you're going to lose quality.) However, digital video (by theory) will never lose quality between transers.
Look at it this way; you have a bucket full of water. You empty that bucket of water into another bucket of water, and then that water into another bucket of water. Every time you empty a bucket, you lose more and more water because not all of the water is going to leave the bucket each time. If you have a bucket of marbles on the other hand, your number of marbles will remain the same not matter how many transfers of buckets you go through. The buckets of water represents analog video. You will lose quality every time you dump your footage to another tape (even if it's from your camcorder to your VCR or your camcorder to your computer.) The marbles represents digital video. You can transfer back and forth from your miniDV tape to your computer and never lose any quality whatsoever.
The bottom line is, if you get a Hi8 camera, your movies are going to look crappy and everything is going to appear out of focus after you edit them. I hope a made this a little more understandable.
If you ever want to talk to me about this then you can message me on yahoo messager. My username is Gnarkill54.

Analog camcorders (ex hi8) do not come with USB or firewire jack so you won't be able to put video on your computer. Most dv cameras come with a firewire port or at least a USB port.
If you want to get video onto your computer, i suggest going to best buy and getting something called "Dazzle" for $70. It can capture video from any camcorder, vcr, tv etc.

Go buy Dazzle. It's converts analog video to digital and puts it on the computer for ya. I'm not sure where you live, but in America it's about $70 at Best Buy.
