Hi guys, I'm a student filmmaker from Bristol, England, making my first BMX video for a final project at college (National Diploma in Media). Its only gonna be about 20 minutes long due to it having to be finished by 14th June-ish and the macs we have are not that big to store endless hours of footage...

Anyway I'm filming mostly on my JVC DV4000 camera with a wide angle lens, editing on Final Cut and the video will be in riding location sections, rather than seperate riders sections, so more like Roadfools than other videos...

I reckon I'll need about 8-10 hours of footage and at the mo I've logged 3 hours...

I keep having probs with strobing and lens flare filming indoor skateparks with my wide angle lens, any ideas?!

Also, how accurately do people edit the motion/riding to the music? I've been trying to edit to the most prominent beats/parts of the soundtrack, but to do it for all would be near impossible right?

Anyone ever have problems with music clearance? If this is good enough when its all done, I was thinking of burning it to DVD and selling copies at jams/contests etc for a few £££... Whats the situation with using other peoples music?

I think most of the bands I'm using will be cool with it, Favez, Appleseed Cast, Buss, all kinda rocky-punk emo/indie shit, y'know...

Thanks for any insight anyone can give me

Alex :)

ok you can... get a hood but that will probably venture into shot, don't film with the wide angle... or ask the guys who own it if one night you could come in for a session with just you and the bmx'rs... then you can bring your own lights so you wont get flares at all (obviously turning the normal lights off)

it's probably best for you to do as you are doing but try to sync big tricks with big events in the music. The mood of the tricks should change with the music...if the music speeds up you could edit the tricks so they are in quick succession and so on...

If you are selling it by yourself to little kids i doubt there will be much trouble... it usually only comes into question when putting the video into mainstream shops... i would at least venture to put the song titles and band names in the credits...

Well I know if you release non secure copy right songs in the US...from the US..you can get hammered...
And I have read if you release it from canada there no problem...but dont hold me to that one.

Germany has no such laws that i have found thru researh....not sure about the UK.

But you see people selling bootlegs movies in notting hill and the cops dont give it a thought.

Plus I have seen local vids in skateshops (in the us w/ out a release company to fall on)and you know they didnt secure the rights to atleast 15 different song put out by 4 or 5 music companies.....so I wouldnt think that they would come after ya!

It's not worth the resourse it would take to prosecute you...I think that has alot to do with it!

Dont forget to post it when ya get it finished bro!:)

Welcome to RR!

Josh
