Spectacular film. For those of you who have seen this movie, and are into the whole psychological thriller movies, I highly recommend the movie Fight Club.

well DD ending had me confuzzled to begin with, until i read this

'As the clock runs out, Donnie makes love with Gretchen and then goes to Roberta Sparrow’s. He’s found love, and now he needs answers. If everyone dies alone, then it doesn’t matter that he loves Gretchen. What he finds is death, destruction, sorrow, and despair. The complete darkness of the fallen world is laid bare before him, and Roberta Sparrow is nowhere to be found. And then the sky starts to fall.

Donnie watches the clouds gather above his house, and then scenes from the movie run in reverse. Donnie is back in his bed on the night of his death. He laughs. He should laugh: he has time traveled, and now he will die—but Gretchen won’t be murdered. His family will weep but the world won’t come to an end at the close of twenty-eight days. He’s sacrificed himself to prove that God exists, that God is indeed sovereign over everything—and if God exists then no one dies alone, it is safe to die, and the world doesn’t have to come to an end. His death does change the future, profoundly, but he laughs because he’s learned that death isn’t the worst thing that can happen to a person, not by half. '

y'see now?

my new theory:

'The end of the world is preventable, but only donnie can do it. If you want a modern day jesus christ - backed up by the qoute 'why are you wearing that stupid man suit'. The bunny guy how does when he is shot by donnie is say - an angel, he knows he is going to die by Donnie regardless of the end of the world so has an intentive to help Donnie save it, to save it Donnie just die in the jet engine crash like he does in the end. But first god wants Donnie to realise he will not be dieing alone as he fears so God takes him right to the end of the world where Donnie realises it is better for him to die and save the people he loves, gretchen and family. So when the ortal opens in the sky donnie travels back through it and dies. By doing so he realises that god trulky exisrs and he will not die alone. And by doing so saves the world (i don't know how, so answers on apost card here)

its never really thrilling though, i mean i guess the engine falling through is a bit frightening, but if anything its more purely philosophical.

dude, i love that movie, its definately a favorite. the part in the end where donnies girlfriend, the one he always makes out with, is all like, oh my god what happened, i feel sorry for there family. that was the saddest part of any movie ive seen. than they have "crazy world" or "wierd world" or whatever the name of that song is playing in the background. its like she never met him, but they were the best couple. ever. yea i have to say, i almost cry everytime i see it. almost.

shamoncowboy
08-01-2004, 04:32 PM
*mad world, yeah i know though, its always sad cuz they are like misfit kids and find like a partner, but hey, i mean its not as sad as if he didnt go back in time and die because then she would be dead after gettin run over by frank, and that would be a love lost.

My favorite part though is at the end where he says something like i cant wait for the world to end, because i will have so much to look forward to, or soemthing like that, pure genius.

another cool part is at the party when he sees the portal flying around and theyr playing the church under the milky way and the bagpipe or whatever instrument solo comes on, so cool

Turns out I was completely wrong. And if you read the old ladies book;

HERE --->
http://ruinedeye.com/cd/time1.htm
Its quite easy to understand in the end, basiclly Time was corrupted when the Jet Engine was sent back from the future meaning a tangent universe was created and causing the world to end. Because Donnie was closed to the engine it was his quest to send the engine back to the old universe to save the world. Frank and his girlfriend die in the new universe meaning they are 'mainipulated dead' and could help Donnie correct the time corruption as they were 'ghosts' if you will.Donnie didn't have to die, but laughs because he enlighten and knew he was going onto a better place.

END>

NIGhtMAre

my friends explanation:

Donnie Darko was just a kid with problems, the first engine crash never happened and he imagined it, the second one was a coincedence. And he was imagining those lines outta his chest and stuff.

^^The only way it can make sense in "our real world"

hahahha two engines from different planes flying nowhere near my house just happened to fall in my house at the same time. If he was imagining the portals coming out of his chest, then how could they lead him to the gun...i wonder, anyways does anyone know if theyre planning on releasing the directors cut.

NIGhtMAre

he must've sleepwalked one night and not remembered the guns, then his mind remembered it...?

You people are thinking too into depth with it. James' theory is the what makes the most sense, being as when you buy the DVD version of Donnie Darko there is a book explaining Time Travel with it, hence explaining the movie's reasoning.

well sorry to bring up an old thread but hey i need some answers.

So frank as the manipulated dead was able to come back and help donnie. because donnie went to roberta sparrows near the end of the movie, gretchen got run over and he shot frank. He was then able to understand time travel and sees the sky open up and goes back in time and lies in his bed. This will stop gretchen and frank from getting killed. And I know that to 'send the engine back to the correct universe and to stop a tangeant universe opening up he will save the world'. okay, but why the hell is this, as in how does donnie getting smashed by the engine send it back to the correct universe or even change anything. What difference does it make if it kills him or not. And it still didnt go to the correct world because at the end they lift it out and on the site in an article it says the engine killed donnie but they dont know where it came from.

so what im asking is 'why does donnie getting killed, instead of being outside and the engine missing him, change anything, why does that save the world???? thanks

robiskewl
03-13-2005, 01:11 AM
well it changes the fact that he never meets gretchen or frank, or the old lady. and teh three combined probably have something to do with time

DCsleepsalone
03-13-2005, 02:02 AM
He did not have to die, he could have still saved the world and got out of the bed if someone woke him up and he escaped death, but no one did. Many say his death wrapped up the movie well, but i disagree, it almost made you feel like crap at the end of the movie. He regards the whole thing as a dream which is shown by him laughing when he woke up, since he is relieved that its all over, thereore the reason he doesnt get out of bed to save himself.

When you die, as far as you're concerned, the world ends.

Think about that.
