View Full Version : why skating rocks, why society rejects us.

i just realised some stuff about skating that most people dont ever think about. everybody thinks that if you skate your into drugs, your always hurt and break bones alot, and that your always up to no good... but reality is most skaters are the complete opposite.

some facts about skateboarding/skaters
-skateboarding isnt nearly as expensive as other sports like hockey or football. no ecuiptment, just some wood, metal and urethane.

-all skaters arent taggers or druggies! drugs affect your skating so 99% of skaters stay away from them. and tagging lours skaters away from the sport just like drugs do. after a while drugs/tagging is all that matters to you and skating isnt important anymore

-injuries? not much... most skaters only have scrapes and a little road rash. hockey players get hurt more than skaters do. broken collar bones, broken fingers, bruised bones from cross checks...skaters usually only only break about 2-3 bones within 15 years, hockey/football players break bones alot more. myself, i've never broken any bones at all but i did bruise my ribs once snowboarding.

why we get looked down on by everyone
-we get looked down on because we're different. we wear baggy clothes, have messy shaggy hair, swear when we get scraped up a bit doing ollies down stairs...

-skating isnt an organized sport! thats the main reason... theres no rules, it can be done anywhere, anytime! we just go out when we feel like it with friends or by ourselves. we dont need 14 people to do it with a coach that tells us what to do. its our own rules! no organizations, no time limits, no rules, no penaltys..... eccept maybe your friend punching you in the arm if your acting like a jackass

but skating exists cus everyone who does it is different, they dont care what anybody thinks about them and they happy with that. i dont care what people think about me, if someone stands up and say they dont like skaters then i just say fine, i hate you too. i like skating cus when i do it i dont think about anything. test tomorrow? detention after school? girlfriend trouble? nothing can make me think when im skating. i can skate whereever i want whenever i want and progress at my own speed.

nobody can change what i do and who i am. and i am a skater.

I'll be honest, I didn't read half of that..but, going off of your topic..I disagree.

"Society rejects us"...I don't care who you are, if you are under 18 years old, and skateboard, people think 'thats cute'. Skateboarding is the cool thing to do now..grandparents are now buying skateboards for their own grand children..If I go to a few cities..and in each city, went door to door, I will bet all of my money, over 80% of the people say 'skatebording seems good'. there are exceptions, because let's put ourself in an old man's shoes...we just want to sit on the porch and relax..but some kid, keeps trying to grind on our ______.....That's stressful to an older guy, and honestly, do you have any clue how many trespassing laws we skateboarders break per day?! Each time we step on someone's property, to go skateboard, that's a possibility..of breaking a law.

Saying society rejects us makes me feel like 'FEEL SORRY FOR ME CAUSE I SKATEBOARD'. Screw what anyone thinks of you, do it cause you love it.

Our looks? I don't want ANYONE to say 'this is what a skateboarder looks like'. I could go out there in a pink dress and skateboard, and still be a skateboarder.

skateboarders don't care what other people think? Not true. DEFINENTLY not true. I've got plenty of friends, who are worried about their look, skill, etc. Everyone does worry to a degree...but of course it's best not to worry.

Chainlink..I'm not so much disagreeing...so don't take it like I'm saying 'you're wrong'..just saying that a lot of boarders seem to think 'we've got it soo bad..'

MEh, you guys are both correct, i agree to both, but people hate sk8ers for the noise they make. Every skater is different, my freinds give skateboarding a BAD name, i know some of my friends swear at people (when ppl tell skaters to buzz of), and some others do drugs, yep true. But other skaters like me and some of my other friends actual set a good example, like teaching LITTLE kids how to skateboard! MY main point is that, skateboarding trouble is NOT from an actual skater, but from the NOISE, lol, well sometimes it can be the actual skater :D

Those are some good points. I'm happy I'm a skater.:)

The sound definently is true, but that doesn't mean people hate us then....which is what many people mistake it for. 'They hate me making noise so they hate me, I'm gonna be louder!'. dude, *I* hate the noise I make..especially when trying a flip trick, slamming the deck down upside down..

i agree with mrock, skaters don't have it as bad as we blow it up to seem, and hes right, people do actually like skaters, its just a minority of people who are i guess *anti-skaters* who stress that skating is bad, i mean, all my neighbors look up to me and my friends because all of the little kids in the neighborhood are outside being taught to skate by older guys and they love it

we have blown up the hatred of a few people towards us to seem like the hwole world is against us, and chainlink, you do actually make some very good points

I agree with both M Rock and Chainlink as they both have some good points,

anyways me and my friends and cussys skate at this college at this big long 3 set which they have just kickflip and ollie down them and this old guy (security) comes out and tells us off but in a nice way he wud let us skate he said but he said there's cameras watching your every move and he tells us places we cud skate and stuff (he's pretty cool),

I try to respect older people, cause they know so much more than I do, and they've been around for so much longer, they deserve the respect. If a guy in his 30's kicks me out of somewhere, I'll get pissed...but if it's an old man, I'll just apologize for skating there, and leave.

exactly they spent millions of $/£ on building them with our money but for us, but they need to keep that place respectable!

Uhhh, you guys have sort've brought this up. One of the reasons people do not like us is because we skate on their property and destroy it. Or discourge business in that particular area.I mean, just think of looking out of your store window and see 3 or 4 skateboarders jumping down your stairs and down your rail. You think "hey, they're messing up my stuff!" And they run out there and tell you to go away, but the next day they're back. Many skateboarders break the law everyday by trespassing, and thats one of the reasons people dont like skateboarding/skateboarders

Also, i stress the words One of the reasons.Meaning thats not the only reason.

snowboarder
04-14-2002, 06:11 PM
I think ppl reject skaters (and snowboarders) because they don't think it's a real sport. I've got some friends that play hockey, soccer or football...and they think that sports are limited to these. Ppl think that a sport is called "sport" when you do it against someone else, when you have trainings, a coach and do competitions. They think you have to be out of breathe after you did it to call it a sport. I saw skating/bmxing/snowboarding are all sports, but more agility sports more than muscular or endurance.

04-14-2002, 08:31 PM
I'm sorry, but I CANNOT buy into the 'think it's a real sport'..because EVERYONE I know, that has seen a friend, or myself ollie down something, spin, or etc..say 'OH DAMN!'...everyone is amazed if you are good......you'd be shocked at how many people got respect for the stuff we do, I think they just don't like the locations that we do them.

hey, i think that people here are generally getting the right idea, especially you Mrock, i think its awsome that you look up to older people, thats how its s'posed to be, and i do agree that sometimes maybe we pick the sk8 locations that they don't want us skating on

Couldn't have put it any better..we're not the ones working for our money, and putting it into landscaping, contracting, and building spots to use for other purposes than skating. I think what you said sk8erpsycho...just expanded my thoughts. Let's think: We build a kicker....for skateboarding...but some Blader/BMXer/Motocrosser (out here, thats possible)...comes along...and ruins your ramp. That's exactly what we do, to other people's stuff. I have a good story to tell, happened today:

I was skating in front of this church, with a little bank, leading to a wall of GLASS doors. There is a little brick ledge, which I work on FS boardslides on it and stuff. I saw a guy walking up the glass, so I non-chalantly skated away, as if I was working on a different trick. Eventually, he came over to me. I was thinking 'oh sh!t, he's gonna kick me out'. He says...."you any good on that thing?". I go "nah, not really". I did a simple ollie, 180, then a nice smooth heelflip [all off camera, damnit]...he says "wow, that's a good un'...how do you jump and make the board come with you in the air?". I explained to him about popping the board and stuff, he goes 'I'm amazed....'. He gets in his van, drives off. Great ending..

sweet, ya i nkow how much it pisses me off when these like mini-bikers, really tiny little bikes, come and just speed down the hill and tear the place up, it just makes me want to throw my board at them, i guess thats exactly how to put it, dang it Mrock you just gave me another point of view! I mean, i said there the ones who build it and stuff, but i never really thought of comparing the mini-bikers and us! we must seem like real jack-asses who won't go away to some people! that makes me wanna.... i dont know, hmmmm

lol...well we're just feeding off each other now, aren't we? lol. Yeah, I didn't think of it, till I put myself in the owners positions....and it makes sense...their anger is justified...whether we like it or not...if we argue, we just give boarding a bad reputation....as trouble makers.

ya totally, and i think any opposition to any of our arguments has stopped talking, haha, oh well i guess that we have made others "see the light" .... a.k.a. know the actual truth, i guess this concludes a good thread

well when i read your first post mrock, i have to say i disagree... not completely though. its just that the cops dont come up to us and just have a friendly chat... no they usually yell at you, and give you tickets and stuff like that...

its just that wherever you go adults usually look down on you because you skate, ive had people in cars perposely try to hit me about 3 times! if i was walking and not skating then they wouldnt have even looked at me. oha nd by the way, i was right on the edge of the road, nobody with a brain skates in traffic!

true, grandparents do buy their grandchildren skateboards....but they are family, they see you as some little kid who couldnt even think fo doing anything wrong... but some old lady you dont know... well they usually cross the street when they see you skating in their direction....

3 attempted homicides on the same person? Call the Guiness book of world records!

I've been planning to do this, and definently will late next month, when I move in with my friend, bryan. Take a little 'tour' of the neighborhood, WITH camera in hand..and take a little poll, of how many people actually hate skating. I'm not scared to say I am 90% sure that people don't hate us as bad as we make it up to be. I think we boarders have gone weak, and need something to argue about, so say 'people hate us'....in an effort to be rebellious for skateboarding. Admit it...nearly everyone wants to be a little rebellious...can't deny it.

My family must be full of losers, because before my grandma passed away, she'd invite the neighborhood skateboarders/bladers inside for a drink during the summer...she REALLY hated them ;)...

I feel that people have a stereotype of sk8ers doing drugs, because of all the *****s there are out in the world, they wear element shirts and all that crap, do drugs and go o yea i can definately laserflip to 5-0 on the hand rail and land in a nose manual, they are the people that are giving sk8ers a bad name

... really? Or do they look down on us because we can't help but loiter, scrape up their handrails, and put wax on their ledges until they turn blue? And by the way, we don't all wear baggy clothes and we don't all have messy shaggy hair.
