Definitely shot with a pro digicam.

Very good shots. I certainly like the street portraits better. The skate shots are all long lens with straight up lighting. I guess there wasn't much you could do about that because you probably didn't have a media pass. Some of those girls are quite nice!! How do you convince people to pose? Carry a big camera with a nice sized flash on it (Yeah the quality of light coming from your fill flash in these is nice.. what flash is it?) .

Overall, excellent work!!

EDIT.. he posted while I was... wow, great shots out of the D70!! Are you using the SB-600 or SB-800 by any chance?

Thanks Mikeji
This is the first sporting event and frist time i've shot a skateboard event so I had no experence before. But I did have a media pass.
What method of lighting could I have used?
I used an SB600

I am really liking the looks of the SB-600... might just have to get myself one. Mind sharing the lens that was used in the shots? Kit lens maybe? Which long lens?

I am thinking that getting that flash off camera might have helped a bit more with the creative lighting if it was possible. Using some pocketwizards and doing under lighting or having a slave sitting on the deck of the halfpipe/quarter pipe.

I agree, the lighting was difficult that day.
The sun was in the wrong place.
A slave on the deck would have been great but I don't think the Xgames guys would have liked that.
I used a 18-70 (kit lens) and a 70-200 Nikon telephoto.

BTW I wanted to mention that I love to skate
but have only been riding for fours years (I'm 36) and I only ride Exkate Powerboards which I love.

Here' s a silly video of my riding on Bali Indonesia:

gnar equipment, nice photos. Mike knows what he's talking about when it comes to skate photos. I think we've both been shooting for around the same time, maybe he has for a little longer, but its all about the PW and flashes.
