Well...the wood version will work great for slides, as long as the surface is flat. A metal version will also work good for slides.
The metal version will last much longer, (I made my rail with steel) than the wood version, and will be much more sturdy.
The wood is easier to work with, than the metal, which would require welding.
The wood won't grind as well...so that's a big drawback. The metal, should grind well...with minimum wax.
My personal preference, is metal. It takes a bit more work, is a tiny bit heavier...but it slides and grinds better. I am considering a small wood rail, for slides only..but not sure.

metal is like twice times as heavy as wood dude. and what i did for a rail was take a wood rail and then put two parallel peices of pvc pipe right niext two each other. its really nice, cause its light as wood but faster and more slick than either.

I used wood and metal. I took a landscape timber and took a piece of angle iron and screwed it on like an upside down like: ^ Its only about 5 inches high but great to learn grinds and stuff.

make the rail out of wood, then using that angled metal so its kinda this shape |__| put it over the rail. screw it down and wulla. thats what i used on my rail and its sweet.
