Good questions mooshoo ;)
I find Adobe Premiere 6 has the most power but is intimidating for novices to video editing and expensive, around $800 I believe?
It has filters, plugins, audio manipulation and many more excellent features.
If you can't afford Premiere then I suggest Ulead Media Studio Pro 6 which is around $250 or so. It has basicly all the same features as Premiere does but at less than half the price. It is also more user friendly for a novice to use but offeres powerful features.
There are many other powerful editing packages out there but those are only the main two that I'm aware of and have really used.
If you want to get into special effects then check out Adobe After Effects 5. You can do some amazing things with that program but unfortuneately I don't know much about it.

Dunno much about video apps but a friend of mine said he likes Sonic Foundry Vegas Video 3.0 better than premiere.. I don't know what's the price tag for Premiere but the Vegas video prices are below...
You can visit the site and download the demo from:
http://www.sonicfoundry.com/products/NewShowProduct.asp?PID=612
You can also go and download other video apps and review what YOU like the best as th best for you might not be the best for everyone and vice versa...
Platform: Windows 98SE, Me, 2000, or XP
Packaged: $479.96
Download: $419.97

um...not that you should do this or anything, because it's 100% illegal, but i 'hear' that you can download Adobe Premiere 6 off of Kazaa, but 'i wouldn't recommend that kind of behavior'.

"Illegal" means it's against the law. Breaking the law gives you a fine or puts you in jail. A guy I know that runs a computer business got into some deep trouble for warez related stuff...you CAN do it, but gotta check your morals! I'm also a bit lucky, since I'm able to borrow my software from my bro..

Well if everyone would DL MP3s and listen to them there would be no money for the musicians to produce it more so there MUST be a lot of ppl who actually buys the music.. Otherwise we wouldn't have MP3s to download.
Warez and morals related to it is always an interesting issue to think about.. As for myself I don't think it is too bad if I DL music and listen to it.. I have bought and owned 2CDs anyway in my life.. From the beginning I was recording the music from radio.. That wasn't illegal back then and I don't think it is illegal even now. And what comes to morals, well, I don't think I would have bought any more than those 2 CDs even without MP3s. I could have left all the MP3s I have there in the internet and could have listened to radio..
Same comes with apps.. As long as I don't make money out of them OR save money by downloading instead of buying, I don't think anyone could care less..
What I steal then? I steal ideas, skills, I learn. Maybe some day my boss asks for my opinion about what apps they should use fot this and this.. I can say an opinion... An honest one..
Software companies should pay attention to that fact that ppl using their software without paying for them, learn them, maybe get companies to buy them later.. I mean what's the use for software if there's no ppl who know how to use them.. And if software costs 1000+ USD, Well it's a tough one to get ppl learn them..
Companies SHOULD release more "learning editions" of their software.. Licensed for use, learning and experimenting with it. But not for earning....
The course Microsoft for example has taken.. Well.. it's a o0ne way ticket.. Where? Well see when we get Operating systems other than Windows that are yet simple to use.. What'll will M$ do after it. when there's nobody who can use their fancy OSs. When people have Operating Systems other than Windows. Ones you can get for free.. It's a tought world to compete when you don't have ppl who can use your software.. ;)

Kazaa isn't made to download warez..it's made for 'file sharing'. How about this. You go download some warez...load up on it. And tell cops...it IS a crime. Kazaa isn't made for that, but most people use it for that. It's equal to stealing, except online. I have talked to a friend, who is a private investigator..that did say, most people arrested for warez, are people that are distributing it. So you may not get into trouble for it, but if they didn't care if you downloaded their software without paying, why would they even charge you? Crime...
