Stronghold, Venice and South Santa Monica has been known as Dogtown since the late 70's. The early Dogtown crew, Tony Alva, Jay Adams, Jim Miur, Bob Biniak,Stacey Peralta and several others are the innovators of pool skating. Sure it was happening in a few other areas but these guys brought it into the limelight. Get or rent the movie"Dogtown and the Z-Boys." It's an awesome documentory all about Dogtown and the early Dogtown surfers and skaters. It tells the story of the birth of skating with killer old footage and interviews from the very begining. It's a must for your skate vid collection.

That's cool Styley, there's a ton of cool pics and stuff on his website. His books F-You Heroes, F-You All, and The Idealist are really sweet also.

GEF sent me this last week.
After MANY years of wondering what the 'other guys' shot looked like,
out of the blue I got an e-mail from the photographer, who heard I was looking for him.
He was in the background of one of my most classic skate images of Tony Alva,
so I was hoping to eventually track him down to see the reverse angle of this shot.
almost 30 years later i finally get to see the shots,
And after a few months he finally has allowed me to have them posted on line
I thought you might get a kick, or at least a laugh, out of seeing these.
check'em out here:

Those are very, very cool pics! Those last two do look like the same pic from opposite angles. Our new park in Santa Monica scheduled to open in the next month or so has a replica of the Dog Bowl as seen in those photo's. 10' deep right hand kidney, cannot wait. I stop by every weekend to check on the progress, Ill try to post some pics. It's gonna be a sick park right in the heart of Santa Monica.

You know, I'm starting to realize just how little the new generation of skaters knows abouttheir skating history. Before today, I didn't think I would ever meet a skater who didn't know the term "Dogtown," but unfortunately, new skaters are either ignorant or just don't care, which saddens me. Dogtown should never be forgotten, it was the golden era of skating; it will never be that good again.

Amen Snaker. It's up to all of us as skaters to know our roots/history and keep the good vibe alive.
