its a genre in that, indie is usually a unique sound compared to artists with major labels. Indie artists do what they want to do, they arent tied down to the corporate shit that will sell most. Because of that, indie music becomes a genre.

The indie bands i usually listen to: The shins, the scene aesthetic, modest mouse (before they blew up), built to spill, death cab, etc.
