Skateboard Trucks

Most axles on skateboard trucks do not distinguish themselves in any notable way from each other with regard to quality. Axles consist of hangers and base-plates. The hanger inserts into the base-plate with its pivot (see illustration).

The stability and steerability of the axles depends on how the kingpin sits in the base-plate and at which angle the hanger is situated in relation to the base-plate.

By tightening or loosening the mother kingpin you can adjust the steering either tougher or easier.

Most important of all: the width of the axle should fit onto the width of the deck. The dimensions of the axle are unfortunately not uniform in inches nor in millimeters. Moreover, sometimes only the width of the hanger and sometimes additionally the length of the axel shaft are measured.

The following applies as a rule:

Decks up to 8 inches: the manufacturer's thinnest axle
Decks up to 8 3/8 inches: the manufacturer's mid-sized axle
Decks over 8 ½ inches: the manufacturer's widest axle
